*Jim's POV*

"Uhhhggggg" I flopped onto my bed after spending hours unloading furniture and boxes into our new home.

It was smaller then our old one, but more open and homely. Not to mention the reek of alcohol that always occupied our old place was gone since Frank wasn't here.

"James!" mother appeared at my doorway, smiling.

I smiled back at her and sat up, patting the bed next to me for her to sit down.

She shook her and tutted softly "when are you leaving for the academy? You need to be there within 2 hours"

I groaned and lay back down, covering my face. "At least his will be my last year" I comforted myself.

She laughed outright "next year honey, don't forget it's a four year course"

I jumped up and grabbed the bag that I packed before we moved. "You watch, I will finish this year" I swear I heard her roll her eyes.

I gave her a one armed hug as I passed her, "I will miss you, you know"

"Of course" she ruffled my hair and grinned "don't forget to come home for the holidays"

I turned and started walking backwards so I was still facing her "how could I forget to come home for the holidays?"

She gave me a look that clearly said how-the-fuck-do-you-expect-me-to-know.

I laughed again and turned around again just in time to avoid hitting the door frame.

................

I stood in front of the door to my dorm room and rolled my shoulders as I shifted from side to side in anticipation.

The door creaked loudly as I swung it open to reveal a large, airy room with two double beds dominating the space.

On the bed closest to the door the was a guy a bit older then me who looked up as I walked in.

"Hi, you must be my new roommate" he extended a hand towards me, which I shook.

"James Tiberius Kirk" I introduced myself "Cadet, hoping to become captain one day, command track obviously"

"Leonard McCoy, medical training, hoping not to die in space" he gestured to the unoccupied bed "make yourself at home James"

"Please" I laugh as I placed my bag on the bed "Jim"

He flopped back on to his bed. "alright Jim, most people refer to me as 'Bones', since my wife left me they're all I have".

"Okay then Bones" I began unpacking my bag, it didn't take long considering all I had were my clothes and a few personal things like photos and a model starship that I got as a kid, it belonged to my father and was one of the few things I had left of him.

"Hey Jim" Bones looked up from the book he was reading not long after I had finished unpacking "do you want to come to the library with me to meet my friends?"

Well, not like I have anything better to do. "Sure thing" I got up, stretched and we left the dorm together.
