*Jim's POV*
"JIM!"
I swung around just as a grinning Gary tackled me to the ground.
"Oops, sorry, I didn't mean to do that," he laughed as he helped me up. "Sure you didn't," I rolled my eyes. "What is it?"
Gary's grin grew. "She said yes," he cackled and I stared at him blankly.
His face dropped and he gave me a Really? look. "Carol, dumbass. I asked her to marry me and she said yes!"
"Oh. OHHH!"
Gary's face softened and he sighed up at the sky. "We've decided to have it soon. A few months maybe. It'll be small, our families, you and Winona - Spock too if he wants to - Kev, Christine, Janice. Maybe Chekov, Sulu and Uhura but we don't know them that well. Carol wants to have it in that park in Iowa, the one with the lake."
"That sounds amazing! I'm so happy for you guys!"
"Thanks," Gary smiled gratefully. "It really means a lot to us, I know Carol was really worried you wouldn't come."
"Of course I'll come! I wouldn't miss it for the world. Mum'll be there to, and I think Spock'll come."
Gary beamed. "Awesome! I'm gonna tell her now! See ya!"
With that he bounded off. I shook my head at his disappearing back and continued walking.
I was meeting Winona for coffee to catch up, it has been a while since we just talked.
I walked into the little shop and moved over to where Winona was sitting, apparently deep in thought.
"Hey mum," I sat opposite her and she looked up, smiling faintly.
"Jimmy, thanks for coming. You look well."
"Thanks. You do too, look well I mean."
We sat in silence for a while before the barista brought our coffee over.
"I ordered before you got here, I hope you don't mind." She explained and I assured her I didn't, and the atmosphere lightened slightly.
She began chatting about her last assignment and I talked about my exams and assignments.
We avoided serious topics, such as Franks death and her drinking, and the conversation flowed easily.
"So, is there anyone special in your life at the moment?" She asked slyly and I grinned down at the table.
"There is! C'mom, who is it? Are they cute? When can I meet them?"
I laughed. "You already have. Spock, you met him the other day."
"Amanda's son? The Vulcan?"
I nodded and she giggled. "Aww, he's cute. Well? When's the wedding? I know Vulcans don't do casual, so it must be serious. More importantly, when am I getting grandchildren?"
I choked on my coffee and held a hand up to stop her. "No, stop. Yes it's serious but we've only been together a few months - Slow down. Lets talk about something else. Gary and Carol are getting married - will you be there?"
Winona scowled slightly. "Only if I have to."
"You do." I informed her and she shrugged. "Whatever. I'm not done talking about you and Spock. How did you convince him to date you?"
I sighed at the ceiling. "Why do you need to know?"
"Because. I'm nosy as. Spill."
I smiled slightly. "It just kinda happened, you know? He says we have a rare bond of sorts. Vulcan bond. It makes us super compatible. Or maybe it's because we're super compatible already, I don't actually know."
Winona awed. "That is so romantic. He'll come stay with us at some point right? Maybe over Christmas? So I can get to know him?"
"I don't know mum, maybe. He has his own family though, he'll want to see them."
Winona pouted, "But he seems so nice and cute and shy. I want to spoil him, you never bring any of your partners over."
I rolled my eyes, "Yeah, cause you always scare them off. Remember that guy I dated for like 3 or 4 months? I brought him home for dinner with you once and never saw him again."
Winona shrugged. "I highly doubt that was me. He probably realised how annoying you are and got out while he still could."
I glared at her and she shrugged again. "Besides, I hated him. I like Spock."
"That's a first," I muttered under my breath and she kicked me under the table. "Hush, I'm a very loving person."
I rolled my eyes, "Sure."
The door burst open and Gary hurried over to our table, ignoring the looks the other customers were giving him.
"What's wrong?" I asked, taking in his concerned face.
"Carol, have you seen her?"
Winona and I both shook our heads. "I thought you were with her. Why? What's happened?"
Gary slumped. "I don't know, I haven't seen her since this morning, I never found her after I bumped into you. She was supposed to meet me hours ago but she didn't show up and she's not answering my messages. I don't know if she's okay - What if she's in trouble?"
I stood and put a hand on his shoulder. "Hey, it's okay, we'll find her. She's probably just doing something else and lost track of time, she might have left her communicator at home. She has to be somewhere."
"Thank you, Jim. You're right, I'm probably just over reacting."
I forced a smile. "You go look around the dorms, and check in with Christine and Janice. I'll look in the main building, she might be in the science labs. Mum can check the gym area. We'll keep in contact."
"Thanks," Gary looked relieved by my confidence and hurried away while Winona looked at me uncertainly.
"Jim, what if...?"
"I know," I replied quietly, pulling my communicator out.
Pike,
We think Carol may be missing, can you use the security system to try and find her? It may be nothing, but I want to be sure.
~Jim
On it.
