Paint the Sky

If you recolored the sky

what would you use?

Would you stand there

on the tallest ladder

paint pallette in hand

patiently rebrushing

the whole sky one shade:

sky blue, as it should be?

Or would you change things

make the sky a rainbow

red, orange, yellow, purple

of the colors only seen at sunset?

Maybe you simply wouldn't care.

You would let the sky

go shades of gray.

Turning the rest of the world

the same dreary

black-and-white.

The best kind of sky-painter

would pick out

all the shades of blue and light gray

that there ever were

and they would know

by heart

how to put back the sky

hue by hue.

How would you paint the sky?
