Somewhere Along the Way

Somewhere along the way

I died

my life was worthless

my heart empty

my future cold and black.

Somewhere along the way

I found out how to live again

I learned

the terms

with no debt unpaid.

Somewhere along the way

I found myself stuck

caught in a vice

placed upon me by two enemies

one who wanted me dead

all my life

before I was born

another his unwitting aide

who say they want me

also to find the way of life

yet choose to condemn me now.

Somewhere along the way

I found myself

at a certain fork in the road

give myself to this empty life

I no longer love

but only despise with my all

to the satisfaction

of those

pulling me under

in this riptide

or choose

to fight for rebirth

into something worthy

of the promise given me.

Somewhere along the way

I found myself wishing:

If only

my baptism of fire

were matched by one

with water.
