After everybody settled back in their seat, with Jia Xue sitting beside him, Caleb took a deep breath, and said,
"There's another thing.."
The rest of the family looked at Caleb. Caleb too, was looking at Caleb, frowning.
Caleb returned Jia Xue's look, and then faced the family again, "I have a love rival.."
The family looked at him, feeling the anticlimax of elation, of formally greeting Jia Xue as half of the family.
"What?" Caleb's mother blinked.
"Who?" His grandmother though went straight for the most important question.
"Jason Guan.." Caleb answered, looking at his grandmother and father, "son of Guan Chen Ji.."
Madam Wang paled and Caleb's father drew a sharp breath. They'd not talked about that name for a long time.
"Wang Fen's estranged step son..?" Caleb's grandmother hissed under her breath. She'd never thought that she'd be talking about that person in a time like this.
Just moments ago, they'd been so happy. Hugging and welcoming Jia Xue, to the family.
"Rival..??" Caleb's father frowned, "aren't Guan Chen Ji's children overseas with his ex wife?"
"They met..the day I met Jia Xue." Caleb said, reluctantly. Talking about this is going to take a toll on him but this is something he needed to tell his family.
He didn't want them to learn about this from other people.
"Remember, when I told you guys about the man who'd dived to save a drunken man who fell overboard?" Caleb asked.
"The drunken man was Jason Guan. And Jia Xue was the one who saved him.."
The family remembered it, as Caleb had talked about it, non stop for the months, whenever they get together for dinner.
But, he never told them, that it was Jia Xue. And Jason Guan.
"What a very disturbing coincidence!" Caleb's sister mumbled, still in a bit of disbelief.
