"Jia Xue ah..." Madam Wang began, gently, her eyes never leaving Jia Xue's face, wanting to read every expression on his face clearly.
"You're really not bothered by how, we were connected to your mother's past?"
Her son, met her yesterday with the news, that Jia Xue knew about Patient X, and how the feud between Guan ChenJi with Wang began, and also the beginning of the entanglement of Guan Fen in everything. She took it fairly well. But then, her son broke the news to her, that patient X was Jia Xue's mother; it shook her. To be honest, it terrified her.
When her son told him that Jia Xue didn't blame them; she wanted to cry in relief but half of her also wanted to make sure. To lose Jia Xue, after looking forward to having him as part of their family, after loving him so much; would be a terrible blow to the family especially to Caleb. She wasn't sure how Caleb would handle it if he lost Jia Xue.
Jia Xue breathed in deeply, as he faced madam Wang showing her her real feelings; not that Jia Xue could ever lie or make up her expression actually. With Jia Xue, one will know exactly that what he's saying was exactly what he's thinking and feeling. He's not someone who would feel something and then say something else.
Jia Xue had been anticipating this meeting, knowing that Caleb's father would tell Caleb's grandmother of their meeting; and she would feel the need to see Jia Xue herself.
"I am really alright..Grandma.." Jia Xue replied, in a soothing tone; knowing that Caleb's grandmother is feeling apprehensive of him; afraid that he's really holding grudges or even planning on leaving Caleb.
"What happened then; none of those was your fault. It's only one man's decision; Guan ChenJi. If I have to blame someone, I would blame him. But it's so long ago..Even if my mother was still alive, I'm sure she would only ask me to stay away from him." Jia Xue smiled, "and I would never take revenge either. Whatever happened, had happened and I am here because of what happened then. Right, Grandma? So, I should be thankful instead..." and Jia Xue meant every words.
Seeing Jia Xue's expression and hearing the sincerity in his voice; madam Wang was finally able to breath easily. Her son wasn't mistaken. Yin Jia Xue didn't hold any grudges and better yet, he's still looking at her, with the same warmth just like before he learnt about Patient X being his mother and her connection to the Wang family.
"Thank you, Jia Xue ah.." madam Wang reached out across the table to take Jia Xue's hand in his, feeling teary eyed as she patted Jia Xue's hand in gratitude and relief.
"But.. There's something bothering you still..Am I right, Jia Xue ah..?" Even though she knew that Jia Xue didn't hold their family responsible for his mother's painful past as a test subject in the Wang Pharmaceutical history, she sensed that Jia Xue was still bothered about something related to it.
"Yes.." Caleb's grandmother had always been so sharp.
"Well..What is it?" Madam Wang asked, feeling a little worried.
"Guan Fen...I am bothered by her..Very much..I can feel that she's going to try something again...soon.."
Madam Wang looked at Jia Xue intently, she actually has the same worry as Jia Xue, "how do you know that..?" She asked, nonetheless.
"Her sabotage and her attempt to kidnap me..and Jason Guan..I feel that she's actually just reading the situation.." Jia Xue told madam Wang of his worry, "she detested me, I think. Just as she detested my mother.."
Madam Wang looked at Jia Xue not quiet understanding what Jia Xue meant.
"Detested..? Wasn't it, Guan Fen who helped your mother to escape?" Madam Wang asked.
"Yes..But she didn't do it out of goodwill..or pity..I think she did it because Guan ChenJi was showing too much interest in my mother."
In the report written by the researcher, nearing the time of patient X escape, whenever The lead researcher was in the research room with patient X, Guan Fen (then Wang Fen) would come and barged into the research room unannounced. And it got to the extent of Guan Fen being in the lab almost half of the day, coming there after school and sometimes not going to school at all.
Jia Xue's mother also told him, of a strange girl who used to come and sneer at her when she was at the lab, and who would arrive before the man who was experimenting on her, could do anything to her. His mother told her that it was that strange girl who left her the key out of the facility, during that heavy thunderstorm night, which continued for a week.
Putting every pieces of information together, Jia Xue could derive that Guan Fen was threatened by his mother's presence. She was jealous of the attention that lead researcher, Guan ChenJi gave his mother. And she was actually hoping that even if his mother managed to escape; she would not survived the outside world.
Jia Xue was sure, that apart from the men, Caleb's father sent to look for Jia Xue's mother, Guan Fen had also sent hers. Thought their orders might very well be different; the first wanted to save patient X while the latter might want to make sure that patient X disappeared from the face of the earth.
Madam Wang knew that what Jia Xue told her rang the truth; Guan Fen had been in love with Guan ChenJi since that time, she spent at the facility. She threw away her own parents for Guan ChenJi. Madam Wang knew that Guan Fen was capable of doing anything for that man.
"That's why I asked baba to help us make sure that she wouldn't sabotage the wedding..."
Madam Wang nodded, then she looked at Jia Xue and blinked, "is that all, Jia Xue ah..? Or do you have something else you would like to discuss with me?"
"Grandma.." Jia Xue said, "Please, don't let Caleb hear anything about this..I don't want him to feel guilty and take the blame for everything.."
"Caleb will not hear anything of this Jia Xue ah..Don't worry.." madam Wang smiled gently at Jia Xue who was giving her a pleading look. Just like his son had told her; jia Xue's more worried about Caleb knowing than the fact that it was their pharmaceutical company that conducted the experiments on his mother.
"And grandma.." Jia Xue bit his lip, as he reached for a letter, he had written "if..anything ever happened to me...Please...Give this to Caleb.."
Madam Wang's face grew grim, "what's this Jia Xue ah..?" She knew what it was and she didn't want to accept it.
"A letter.." Jia Xue answered, this is hard, and he didn't want to do this but he had to, "if anything ever happens to me...Caleb would be devastated...He would go crazy and he would think crazy things. And do crazy things.." actually Caleb might possibly take his own life, "I don't want that..So please grandma..Take this..and keep it safe...Give it to him...If-"
Madam Wang snatched the letter, stopping Jia Xue from saying the obvious, "nothing will happen to you..Do you hear me, Jia Xue ah..Nothing...!"
Caleb would not be the only one, devastated if anything happens to Jia Xue. The family might never be able to take the blow.
Jia Xue smiled, nodding, "of course..." he hoped that what he's telling Caleb's grandmother is something he could be sure of.
But, he knew, that there's every possibility that in the end she might have to give the letter to Caleb, too.
