Chapter 46 - The Odds

Nagising si Camilla sa boses ng kanyang ina habang kausap ang doktor. They were at her bedside discussing her possible discharge from the hospital that day.

She slowly opened her eyes. White walls and cream colored ceiling welcomed her as she adjusted to the room's brightness.

She gently moved her head towards the direction of the voices she was hearing.

"'mmy?" Camilla called her mother. Her voice hoarse and weak.

"Oh, she's awake." sambit ni Monalisa.

"Hi Camilla, how are you feeling?" a woman  wearing a lab coat probably in her late 40's smiled at her.

"Fine. Just thirsty." she answered.

"Can she have water Doc?" Monalisa asked.

"Yes, sure. Wala namang nakakabahala sa blood tests niya. I already changed her diet from NPO to DAT." the doctor explained.

With that being said, agad kumuha si Monalisa ng bottled water at binuksan ito. She poured it into a separate glass and brought it to Camilla's mouth so she could drink.

Nagpaalam na rin ang doktor na tumitingin kay Camilla.

"Thank you Mommy." Camilla said after few sips. She goes back to resting.

"Kamusta ka na? Are you still feeling dizzy?" Monalisa asked Camilla as she brushed her hair gently.

"Hindi naman na gaano 'mmy. May konting stiffness lang sa neck but I'm okay po." Camilla answered.

Monalisa then pressed that part of her neck where she says was stiff. She massaged it slowly.

"What happened 'mmy? I don't remember--" Camilla started to ask. She looked quite disoriented at the very moment.

She could not remember how she ended up in the hospital. The last thing she could recall was she was in the living room talking to Hero.

"Last night." Monalisa sat down in front of her.

"Yes, birthday party ko po di ba?"

"According to Dr. Feleña, mataas ang alcohol level mo sa dugo. You were so drunk that you got sick." she said to Camilla slowly as if talking to a little child.

"I was?"

"Yes. Ang sabi sa akin ni Keira ang dami mo na daw palang nainom."

"I was with Keira when I passed out?" Camilla asked. Her memory of last night was in a tangle. She remembered being with Keira but that was before she was talking to Hero.

She suddenly felt nauseated. Bits from her recollection of yesterday got all mixed up and it's making her feel sick.

"No. You were...you were somewhere else." Monalisa told Camilla. Now she was even more confused.

"Saan po 'mmy?"

"You were out. Wala ka sa bahay--" Monalisa stopped and shook her head before proceeding "You know what? It doesn't matter Camilla. Ang mahalaga ngayon ay makapag pahinga ka. Para hindi na bumalik ang lagnat mo."

It made Camilla remember something though.

"Wait I remember something 'mmy. I saw someone before I lost my consciousness. Hindi ko lang maalala kung sino." she told her mother.

"Ahh...must be Helen's son." Monalisa answered. She's peeling oranges for Camilla.

"Helen? Who's Helen?"
