CH 46 - Laying down the law

Gramps POV

I sit quietly in the large sitting room, sipping my tea and listening to the parent's talk. Most had slept on it and come to terms with the fact the marriages had happened, but my poor nephew Som, was still in denial.

"It seems it's done." Nai sighs. "Now how do we handle it?"

"Many alliances and close relations will be furious when they find out." Millie shakes her head.

"Did you forget it went straight into the book?" Poppy says sitting. "Prepare to receive cards of congratulations or death threats."

Of course it went into the book, that's what it's for, the Book of Announcements. To make sure the country knows of marriages and engagements that happen, every village or town hall had a copy.

"If we had some warning, we could have handled this better." Tani looks at me.

Warning? They never would have let me do it! And what was he complaining about, I helped his playboy son marry a cute Wayo.

"Don't give me those looks." I say putting my cup down. "Those kids deserved to be married, its true love. For all of them, and you wanted to keep them waiting!"

I see the twitch; Som is going to snap soon with all the mention of true love.

"Knot and Tew..."

"Of course, for them as well." I snap at my son. "Has there been a maid incident since he got engaged to Tew?"

My son opens his mouth but can't think of a reply, because it's true. He tries a few more times but looks at me surprised when he realises it himself.

Before any more is said, both the doors to the sitting room bang open moments after each other. Beam, Forth, Yo and Phana walking in from one and Kit, Ming, Knot and Tew from the other.

"If you're talking about our future, shouldn't we be present?" Beam asks first.

I drink my tea again innocently when Tani glares at me. I didn't do anything, apart from sending a note to say your parents are plotting, but that doesn't make me guilty.

"I already made this clear, Ming..."

"I was here first kitty." Beam stops his brother and carries on. "Forth is now married to me and we intend to stay married."

"Beam...son I just think..."

"I understand, but he's not the crown prince, I really don't want to...but I will put up with a ball if I must but our decision will not change."

"But son we just...."

"If you try anything, I will kidnap him." Beam says resolutely. "This prince belongs to me."

"Beam..." Forth smiles.

"Beam..." Millie rushes over and takes Beams hand, her eyes tearing. "I will leave him in your care."

"Don't worry." Beam promises hugging her. "I won't let him out of my sight...mother."

Don't laugh, don't laugh, well done Beam. So, he heard the story, ... vodka and mushrooms never really did mix. But neither did smoking pipes, I still don't know what was in that thing... or how we ended up in that mountain sleeping with a duck.

"I will make this very clear." Kit says irritably. "You're worried about what people will say, but to be honest, I don't give a damn! Give them red packets and be done with it. I planned to stay married to my idiot."
