The servants rush around completing, or most likely messing up, their daily duties. I almost feel bad for Sebastian being forced to clean up their mistakes.
Almost.
I walk up the long carpeted staircase and down the hallway to reach my study, grabbing a bookmarked novel that lies on my desk and sit on my cushioned window seat.
Watching the rain fall onto the gardens. I get lost in the tragic beauty of it all. The rain and the snow in recent weeks have killed some of my favourite white roses, yet I can't help but enjoy the raindrops falling onto the window pane. I tap my fingers on the glass to the timing of the melancholy sound of pitter patter as one by one the raindrops fall. Then I notice it.
Sebastian standing with an umbrella, tending to the surviving roses as he sets up a canopy to keep them from drowning as the others have.
The sky fills with grey clouds and a bolt of lightning flashes across the sky, the thunder clapping loudly. It makes the memories of that night return. The thunder clapping begins to sound like the gun that shot my parents. The bolt of lightning, like the bright and sudden spark of the fire that swallowed my home whole in an everlasting inferno. Every time I blink I remember the darkness within that burlap sack they stuffed my ten year old self into. Rough, deep voices laughing as the heat from the fire and the lack of air consume me.
A single tear rolls down my cheek as the images flash before me, then another, then another. Once the spiral of memories ceases to be, I try to stop the flow of tears.
That's when he turns, standing under the canopy as he looks up to meet my eyes. I give him a smile as I try to conceal my emotions, to shove them deep down and stay as the Evil Nobleman, as the Queen's Watchdog and as the emotionless Earl. But I simply could not contain my feelings as I receive a warm, caring smile from the man who I've been so fond of for so long.
A sunny smile on the rainiest of days.
(Author: I know this is a short fluff kind of chapter but I will be going into the darker side of Black Butler so don't worry about not having action so far)
