In which hope is not lost for the world of snakes, and Valt finds out more about what happened to his lost friend.
-----
I slip in and out of consciousness. One time I wake up, someone's picking me up in their arms. Another time, I can see a helicopter landing nearby. Another, someone's carrying me through the jungle. The last time before I fully wake up, I see a pair of teal eyes watching over me.
"So this is what Lui Shirosagi had been talking about."
---
I gasp, bolting upright and looking around. I'm in a metal room with beeping computers and a huge machine to the far wall, colorful wires sprouting from the top of it.
Then I see the people in it. Theodore Glass and Norman Tarver. Or Ashtem and Gold Eye. Both are dressed in their Snake Pit uniforms, but neither are wearing their masks.
Ashtem isn't smirking for once, instead he actually looks really tired.
He sits in a simple chair while Norman stands beside him, and he watches me calmly. "I see you've finally decided to wake up. Good, I was beginning to worry."
I don't know what to say. My heart is hammering in my chest, my throat is tight and I feel myself shaking. I keep thinking, he's gonna turn me into Spryzen, over and over and over and I can't get it to stop.
It feels like years of waiting and staring before I finally manage to swallow the lump in my throat, choking out, "W- What are you going to do to me?"
He lifts his eyebrows, but he doesn't really seem surprised. "What am I going to do? Nothing, except deliver you back to the resistance as soon as possible."
"... I don't think I believe you."
"Of course you don't, but that doesn't change the truth." He sighs, leaning back in his chair. "I'm certain you'd like an explanation, though. Am I wrong?" I shake my head. "Very well, then. See, I have a system that's connected to the resistance's radio, and I listen in on their conversations to see what's going on. I heard when Lui Shirosagi called for a helicopter in Beigoma, and when they were calling out to a third party for help in saving you from Spryzen."
"I knew where it would be taking you- to the jungle the first Snake Pit is located in. See, it doesn't know our exact location, but I'm sure it thought you would." He gestures to Norman as he continues. "I sent Norman to intercept the group, and bring you back here. When the coast is clear, we will escort you back to BC Sol headquarters."
"Really?" I ask, and he nods. "Are- are you helping the resistance because you're mad at Spryzen for taking over the Snake Pit?"
"I'm helping the resistance because I'm tired of the ongoing war, the brainwashing, and Requiem in general. I want to help right the wrong I've created, and this is the way to do it." He pauses, looking thoughtful. "But I would be lying if I said I wasn't angry with Spryzen for overthrowing me."
I look to Norman. "What about you? Why are you helping?"
"For the same reasons Theodore is. And I'm tired of the death, the suffering, and having to hide all of the time. I want the world back to normal as much as you do."
"Oh," I mumble, looking at my feet uncertainly. After a few minutes, I look back to them. "Well, thank you for saving me, and for helping the resistance."
Norman nods but Ashtem doesn't do anything. We sit in silence for a little while, then I find another question to ask and I look at Norman. "So, why would Spryzen care about finding the first Snake Pit? It has, like, a bunch of other Snake Pits to hide in, doesn't it."
