Dean found a case in Montana. Since Sam was busy elsewhere, he brought along Cas.
"How long until we get there?" Cas asked once they got in the car.
"Should get there by sunrise at least. How long you think you can last?"
"I can remain awake for as long as I want. It's all about willpower."
Dean chuckled. "Okay, then."
In about thirty minutes, Cas was sleeping like a baby.
Dean glanced over at him and chuckled to himself. This whole "Cas being human" thing had its perks.
They suddenly hit a small bump in the road, which was enough to wake him up.
"I was resting my eyes." He spoke hastily.
Dean grinned. "Sure you were, buddy."
"How long has it been?" He yawned.
"Half hour, tops."
Cas rubbed the sleep from his eyes. His demeanor went from tired to anxious pretty quickly. "Dean?"
"Yeah?"
"The posted speed limit is 45 miles per hour."
"And?"
"We're going at 60 miles per hour."
"There's no traffic, Cas. No biggie."
"Dean, I don't feel comfortable with your reckless driving."
"'Reckless driving'?"
"Yes. That's what I said. Just slow down."
"Cas, look at the road. There hasn't been another car out here for miles. We are fine."
"Slow. Down. You're making me nervous."
"Since when do you get nervous?"
"I swear, if you get us killed, I will... kill you."
Dean laughed. "Good luck with that."
"Dean-"
"Just go back to sleep, Cas. I'll wake you up when we get there."
"I can't sleep. I'm too anxious."
"Cas, I swear on my own grave that we will be fine."
"Your swearing doesn't calm my nerves."
"Well, tough. 'Cause that's the best I've got."
And, just for fun, he decided to mess with his head.
Out in the distance, he saw a slight upward curve in the road. He waited until just the right moment, then he floored the gas, and when they hit the curve, the car went flying.
And Cas actually screamed.
"SLOW DOWN! WE'RE GONNA DIE!"
Dean suppressed his laughter. "Cas, we're fine. We're not gonna die. I was just messing with you, okay?"
Cas had sunk in his seat, his eyes squeezed shut, making small whining noises. He really was spooked.
Dean pulled the car over and turned to face Cas. "Cas, look at me."
Cas looked up at him through one eye.
"I would not get you killed, alright? I'm sorry if I scared you, I was just kidding around. 'Cause I do that frequently. And if it'll make you feel better, I'll drive this car at 55."
"The posted speed limit said 45."
"Seriously? Only 45?"
Cas sighed. "Dean-"
"Hey, it's fine. I can drive at... forty friggin five if it makes you happy."
"I'm not worried about me. I'm worried about you."
"What?"
"I don't want anything to happen to you, Dean. I don't want you to get in a car accident and... die. Again. I can't help but fear for your safety."
"You're worried for me?"
"Of course I am. I l-" He stopped himself. "I care about you, Dean. I don't want to lose you."
Dean couldn't help but be a bit touched by his words. The fact that Cas would put his well being above his own made him feel... loved. And that's all he ever wanted from his angel.
"I love you, Cas." He blurted.
There was a hitch in Cas's breath. He smiled. "I love you too, Dean."
Dean smiled brightly. "Screw Montana. We can park this car right here and drive in the morning. I'm beat."
"Sounds good to me."
They got in the backseat and fell asleep next to each other, and neither of them slept alone ever since.
