Prom night. Cas's worst fear. Just like with any dance. Prom night was supposed to be fun, but the homophobes kinda ruin the idea for Cas.

He was going with Dean, his boyfriend. It was a well known fact that the two of them were dating, but it still didn't sit well with just about anybody.

That's what Cas thought. Whenever they walk down the hall holding hands, the whispering started. All that whispering. He didn't know exactly what they were saying, but it was clearly about the two of them.

He tried to have confidence when he walked in the room with Dean, but everyone stared at them. Everyone always stares at them. So many pairs of eyes silently judging them. Some not so silent.

Whisper.

Whisper.

Whisper.

He tried not to obsess over it, but it just drove him crazy. What the hell were they saying? Nothing good, he was sure.

He and Dean sat at a table in the back of the room, Dean holding his hands.

"What's wrong, baby?" He asked.

Cas sighed. "You know what's wrong. You know exactly what's wrong."

"Don't let 'em get to you. You don't know what they're saying."

"That's just it! I'm tired of not knowing! If they are talking about me, about us, I want to know about it. I just feel so insecure."

"You shouldn't feel that way. You know I will always be here for you. You do know that, right?"

"Of course I know that. You know I know."

"Then prove it to me."

"How?" Dean stood up and held out one hand.

"May I have this dance?" He smiled. Cas smiled because Dean smiled. It was contagious. Cas stood up and held Dean's hand.

"You may."

They walked out on the dance floor, Cas growing more nervous with each step he took. Dean seemed to notice.

"Don't worry about what they think. It doesn't matter. Just worry about what you think."

A new song started playing. It was an old REO Speedwagon song.

"I can't fight this feeling any longer."

They stood in the middle of the floor. Dean's hands were at Cas's waist and Cas had his hands on Dean's shoulders.

"And yet I'm still afraid to let it flow."

They moved in time with the music, all of Cas's worries seeming to leave his head.

"What started out as friendship has grown stronger.

I wish I had the strength to let it show."

Dean was singing along quietly in Cas's ear. It made Cas smile.

"I tell myself that I can't hold on forever."

It felt as though he and Dean were the only two people in the room. Everything else began to fade away.

"I say there is no reason for my fear."

Dean took Cas's hand and spun him around, and Cas was on Cloud 9. He felt so carefree. He was on top of the world.

"'Cause I feel so secure when we're together."

They pressed their foreheads together, smiling like a couple of idjits.

"You give my life direction, you're making everything so clear."

Dean continued to sing in his ear, knowing that he had succeeded in getting Cas's mind off the whispers.

"And even as I wander, I'm keeping you in sight.

You're a candle in the window on a cold, dark winter's night.

And I'm getting closer than I ever thought I might.

'Cause I can't fight this feeling anymore.

I've forgotten what I started fighting for.

It's time to bring this ship into the shore,

And throw away the oars forever.

'Cause I can't fight this feeling anymore.

I've forgotten what I started fighting for.

And if I have to crawl upon your floor,

Come crashing through your door.

Baby, I can't fight this feeling anymore."

Cas ended up with his arms around Dean's waist, his head resting on his chest. He had his eyes closed so he could embrace the moment.

By the time the song--their song--was over, the sound of applause filled the air. Applause? Cas remembered that they weren't really alone. His mind just tricked him into believing that.

But why was everyone applauding? Sure it's a good song, but it's not that good. He looked out at the crowd. Wait a minute. They were applauding for... him? Were he and Dean that good?

He looked up at Dean, who was smiling at him. Possibly to drive their audience crazy, Dean pulled Cas in for a "dip kiss". And if he was trying to intensify the cheering, it worked. The crowd roared with applause, which nearly made Cas cover his ears.

Dean and Cas sat down at the table in the back, Cas resting his head on Dean's shoulder. Many people came up to them and went on about how awesome their dancing was.

One of them went so far as, "Whenever I see you two in the hallway, I just knew you were something special. Me and everyone else! We've been talking about what song you should dance to tonight for a while now! I knew it should've been Speedwagon, they're pretty awesome!"

Dean chuckled. "Yeah. Thanks, Jo. It is Jo, right?"

"Yeah. Well, see you later!" And she left.

"Well, she's a Chatty Cathy." He looked down at Cas, who looked exhausted.

"Yeah. I'm getting tired."

"I can see that. How much longer do you think you can last?" He asked.

Cas let out a long yawn. "Not much longer." Dean gave him a kiss on the head.

"Ready to go?"

Cas shrugged. "I dunno. I don't wanna leave early. Looks like we're the life of the party."

Dean smiled. "I don't think anyone will mind our absence. Come on, it's almost midnight. Believe it or not, you need sleep."

"I know. I just hate leaving parties early. I feel like the wet blanket."

"You're no wet blanket. You're a sweet, adorable, funny, blue-eyed angel of a blanket."

Cas smiled and yawned again. "And you're a cute, fun, amazing... beautiful... lovable... cute...." He trailed off as he started to fall asleep. Dean smiled, wondering how someone could possibly fall asleep at prom. At least it was friggin adorable.

He picked him up and carried him in his arms bridal style. He got him to his Impala and drove him home. He took him inside and tucked him into his bed.

His eyes fluttered open, and he looked up at Dean. He smiled tiredly.

"Dean. Stay here with me." He mumbled sleepily. How could Dean possibly say no to that face?

He climbed into bed with him and held him close. He yawned, a wave of exhaustion washing over him. He started humming the tune to their song. Jo was right.

REO Speedwagon is pretty awesome.
