Chapter 79- Hope

After a phone call with Jack, who couldn't stop complaining about how fast I was growing up, I slid down the stairs. It could be true, but the boy clearly knew how to communicate. I was relieved to learn that he had found a part-time job at the mall, where he could earn a decent wage advertising some clothes. With the help of their families, he and Vicky were still looking for an apartment. Of course, with all of this news, Vivian thought it would be a good idea to get things for free, but that was clearly not the case.

I entered the living room, where dad and Reese were sitting on the couch, staring at his phone. "Good morning, dad," I greeted as I sat down beside them, Reese scooting towards me.

He shifted his gaze to me. "I think you're forgetting that it's not morning." He chuckled. "It's dark outside."

I shrugged helplessly. "Oh yeah." The sky was pitch black when I looked through the peep of the blinds. "Then good night, except I'm staying not going."

I need to fix my sleeping timetable!

"Right," he nodded, confused by my logic.

"So are you still looking for a date on tinder?" I tried to look at his phone but couldn't find anything. "Please tell me you removed that bio."

He simply laughed at me. "That bio was iconic," he noted, shaking his head. "And no I'm not searching anymore; I just think dating isn't really for me."

"What do you mean by that?"

He released a small sigh, before staring up at me with his hazel eyes. "I'm not really connecting with anyone. If I'm being honest I don't think I really want to. I think that I'm going to just stick with you, me, and Reese."

I understood from his perspective. It wasn't the fact he would never forget mom and thought he was replacing her. It was the fact that he couldn't imagine anyone understanding him like we did. And that was fine. Sometimes you just had to accept the fact that you would only ever fall deeply in love with one person in your entire life. But he had me and everyone else around him to keep him company. Yes, seeing him with someone else would had been nice. But on the other hand, not everyone liked the idea of moving on. And to be honest, I don't think I'd want a stepmother. I mean, I had Jillian, who I looked up to as a second mother to me.

I didn't need anything more than that.

With a slight smile, I nodded at him. "I respect that. If that's what makes you comfortable, then I'm okay with that, and I think I prefer it this way too."

He wrapped his arm around my shoulder and pulled me to his side before kissing the top of my head. "Thanks, kiddo."

"At least no one needs to be blinded by those bad pick up lines," I sneered as I messed with Reese's curly locks.

"They're not that bad," he argued.

"Okay, if that's what makes you feel better," I laughed. "So how was work?" I asked the standard question.

"You don't even want to know." When I looked at his side profile, he rolled his eyes."I was arresting this man who was caught stealing, and whilst I was handcuffing him, he just so happened to fart on me."

Just then, I bursted out laughing in his face. "Why is that you arrest the most strangest people?"

"I don't know!" He exclaimed, holding his hands up in surrender. "It's like they purposely send me out just so they can torture me."
