Chapter 56 - One Final Battle

There was no word from Tails regarding the progress of the Ruby destabilizer. And with that lack of communication, Sonic had proposed the idea of keeping Infinite and the Eggman Empire distracted as Tails completes his task. Undoubtedly, Infinite would try and seek out Tails the moment his upgrades were fully implemented into his already devastating prowess. Not only that, but going all this time without a single checkup from Tails had spooked the rest of the Alliance, but they tried not to think about the worst possible outcome and instead, tried to focus on putting an end to Infinite's terrifying reign. Infinite needed to be stopped immediately, regardless if Tails could've completed his work or not.

The Alliance were on their way to Metropolis where Infinite was suspected to be located. Knowing that Eggman had made this city his main hub for the Empire, this would be the smartest place to look for him and Infinite. The emotions the Alliance had felt were quite mixed. People like Silver, Blaze and Shadow were more than eager to face Infinite once again and hopefully defeat him this time, while Cream, Charmy and the various allied soldiers were fearing for their lives.

Sonic however, was feeling an entirely different sentiment compared to his comrades; guilt. He didn't want to leave Tails behind again, but at the same time, he felt that this decision was for the best. Amy had taken quick notice of his despair laden eyes, despite how hard Sonic tried to keep an upbeat demeanor.

"I know you feel guilty about leaving Tails and the Rogue's behind." she said, comforting him.

Sonic quickly turned his head toward Amy, surprised how she was able to detect the emotions he thought he were hiding oh so well. "H-how did you know?"

"I can see it in your eyes. You feel bad about it, but don't worry, Tails and the others can take care of themselves pretty well. They're pretty strong, y'know?"

"Yeah but...ah, I suppose you're right. I need to stop undermining just how strong he is. I guess Infinite is just screwing around with my head again."

"Yeah...the fear he invokes in other people...it's not like anything I've ever seen before. Silver was shaking like a leaf until I calmed him down. And you don't even wanna know how Cream was feeling. I mean...are you sure we can even beat him without that little doohickey Tails is making?"

"Of course! Well...maybe. I mean, Tails' thingy will definitely come in handy, but even without it, I'm sure we can beat him. Did I mention how Gadget was able to put a huge crack right in the Ruby?"

"Who's Gadget?"

"Y'know, that red wolf with the grappling hook. Anyway, my point is, if we really try our hardest and utilize our full potential as a team, I have no doubt that we can beat him."

Amy took a moment to think about what Sonic had said, all while having a slightly despairing frown on her face. She had initially reckoned that Sonics advice was a bit too overzealous, but the more she thought about it, the more her expression curved into her trademark warm smile. Eventually, she gave Sonic an approving head nod as well a friendly chuckle.

"Oh Sonic, I guess you're right." she giggled while rubbing the back of her head.

Sonic emulated Amy with a grin and head nod of his own, assuring that the two were on the same page. Meanwhile, Blaze grew worrisome when she noticed the way Silver was fidgeting his hands in his lap, all while blankly staring into his intertwining fingers, his eyes refusing to blink in the process. She could tell he was scared, and with her being the comforting partner that she was, walked over to him and did her best to try and ease his weariness.

"I guarantee you he's gonna be much stronger this time. I don't wanna say there's no chance of survival, but at the same time...I'm not sure how we're going to beat him unless we hear back from Tails."
