Well, shit.
How in the hell did this guy find out? You knew L was good, but you didn't know he was THAT good. But no matter how he managed to track you down, you stayed steadfast. Every question that filtered voice through the laptop before you asked, you answered with "I don't know" or "what the fuck are you talking about?". Because you weren't a member of the nameless organisation that killed rich and powerful who abused people and paid off the police to keep it quiet. As far as anyone knew, you weren't involved at all.
Most of the world thought this supposed organisation was just a stupid conspiracy theory. That all the times a CEO or politician got outed as an abuser, trafficker, child abuser etc and a week later ended up dying in an 'accident' were all just unrelated incidents. After all there was no evidence to suggest it was anything but an accident right? Of course someone driving 100 miles over the speed limit while drunk would die in a crash. Of course someone who has a heart condition could die from said condition at any time. Of course someone outed as a child liked would end their life, everyone knew what happened to those kinds of people in prison. So the majority thought the idea that there was some secret organisation killing rich assholes who paid their way to silence their victims and get off Scott free was just some stupid conspiracy theory that people with too much free time on weird corners of the internet came up with. What's next? The men in black are real?
You and the members of the group covered your tracks so well, people didn't even think you existed. So how the FUCK did L find you?
Your only plan today was to get some soap and washing powder from the corner store, but you ended up snatched into some car and put in an interrogation room with your hands cuffed and your pockets emptied. The only thing you could do, was keep denying.
"So that's all you're going to say? That you have no idea what I'm talking about?" The filtered voice of the mysterious detective spoke.
"You sound like you spend too much time on 4chan conspiracy theory threads" you replied, keeping up the 'innocent person annoyed at being accused' act.
"Believe me (y/n), we monitor those threads for criminals confessing to shootings, not for aliens building the pyramids conspiracies"
Well... he had a point. There have been multiple shooting arrests connected to that website.
"There's no way this is legal, don't you need to read me my rights? Have a warrant for my arrest? This is kidnapping!" You grumbled.
"Committing multiple murders, or in your case, being the mastermind behind the murders is illegal"
How did he know so much? Even the fact you didn't actually pull any triggers, you were the one who planned the missions. This L guy... he was almost psychic or something...
"Yeah, that's why you should find the actual murderer. If there even is one! Didn't the last guy you mentioned die in a car crash? It was all over the news. Obviously driving drunk will lead to a crash" you said.
"One glass of wine is not enough to cause a blood alcohol level six times the legal limit" L replied.
"And you think I know how to make one glass cause that? I don't even like alcohol, I know nothing about what drink causes what effect. Look, you can search me all you want, you're just going to be disappointed. You're so lucky I can't see your face or I'd be giving a detailed description to the police about the guy who kidnapped me!"
No matter how internally panicked you were, you had to stay calm enough to act like an annoyed innocent. If an innocent person got snatched up and interrogated for a crime they didn't commit, they'd be offended, scared and annoyed. You just had to keep that act going. This L guy knew way too much... it's almost like he was there when the planning for the most recent kill happened. But how would he have done that? Every single detail is done remotely. No two members of the organisation had ever actually met face to face. No one used their real names, addresses, ages, showed their faces or left any digital evidence. So how did L know?
"I'm not doing this to arrest you, these people you're killing would be getting the death sentence anyway. You're making sure they don't pay their way out of what their genuine sentence would be. I'm not here to side with the child abusers who pay their way out of it. I'm here, because you possess an uncannily strong ability to extract evidence of such activities amongst the upper class. I want you to work with me" L announced.
You stayed quiet for a moment, processing that. Was he telling the truth? Was this a tactic to get you to confess? You gave the webcam in the laptop a confused look.
"What?" You simply stated.
"I want your skill on my team of agents. It ensures rich criminals don't get away with their crimes. With your skill and my ties, these people can be forced to go through trail without the possibility of paying their way out. And will likely be sentenced to death anyway, those who don't will still be getting life in prison for their crimes" he explained.
If he wasn't bluffing just to get you to confess, you were dumbfounded. L, the world's greatest detective... was completely ok with what you were doing? Well... he was right that these people would be getting death sentences anyway. It seemed like he was more pissed they didn't go to court first, than the loss of their life. Who would be sad about a child abuser dying anyway?
"Are you serious? I feel like this is all some kind of... weird role play a kidnapper is doing for some kind of weird enjoyment" you said.
"Dead serious. If you accept this offer, we can move on as if this whole interrogation didn't happen. You continue your job, expect you forward that information to me. Of you decline, I won't arrest you, but I will be keeping an eye on you to use the information you dig up for myself" he replied.
"So either way you'd be using my intel?"
"Yes, although of you do so willingly it'll be a smoother, less invasive process"
This guy... was weird. This whole situation was weird. Was he even telling the truth? Or was this just some FBI sting operation ploy to get you arrested? Until he could prove he was legit, you had no choice but to keep up the act. So, you simply leaned back in your chair and sighed.
"You're insane, you know that?" You said.
"My only clinical diagnosis as autism, so no, I'm not insane. Lacking in certain social comprehension perhaps, but not insane" he replied.
"Yeah that checks, only someone with no sense of social cues and a massive special interest could pull this off..."
And that wasn't an insult, he basically admitted it himself.
"You have a week to decide, don't try reporting this to the police, it'll go nowhere" L added, before the microphone cut out and screen turned off.
And then, the door unlocked, and you felt the cuffs unlatch. Since when were automatic cuffs a thing? You were free to go though, and wherever this place was must be in an area you knew or he wouldn't have just let you walk free, you'd get lost otherwise. But before you got up and left, hi'u just had to take a moment to sit there and process everything. You looked up at the camera, probably still recording you.
"I don't know what just happened... but don't think you're getting away with this" you muttered.
L, all the way across the country watching it all play out over his computer, simply snickered.
"You'll be a lot of fun to work with (y/n)... I'm sure of it"
