A/n: THIS WAS WRITTEN IN 2022 AND I THOUGHT I PUBLISHED IT BUT APPARENTLY I DIDNT SO OOPS HERE IT IS LIKE 3 YEARS LATE.
my fav AU ever is L surviving blue ship and adopting Maki afterward. Like??? Man who lost his parents meets kid that lost her parents and feels the need to protect her??? So cute. But that means L would have the task of giving Maki the dreaded talk. Since she's 10 during blue ship and in like 3 years she'll be 13 and hitting puberty. So I bring you L desperately trying to give Maki the talk in the least awkward way possible and failing miserably so (y/n) steps in. Fem reader for this one.
He could have sworn it was only yesterday that 10 year old Maki showed up at the taskforce doors in tears over witnessing her dads death. But now she was 13, growing up right before L's eyes.
Was this was Watari meant when he said 'L you're growing up so fast!' Because it felt like no time had passed at all, but Maki was taller, smarter and more mature than when they first met. Since saving and adopting her, Maki and L had grown so close you'd think L was her biological dad. Although there was one thing he didn't think about when he adopted her.
The talk.
Now Maki was 13, growing up. And L was having a mental breakdown trying to find a way to explain everything to her without traumatising her and making it awkward. Would it be better for a mother to explain this to a young girl? Probably. But he was a single father here, he had no choice.
"Fuck me how do I do this..?" He sighed, trying to think of something, anything.
Should he just buy a book and tell her to read it? It would avoid awkward conversation but that in itself is kind of traumatic. He remembered hearing the girls in the orphanage he grew up with talk about 'the dreaded book' they had to read. How does a first time single father explain to his adopted daughter what she was about to go through? If only he had a wife that could explain this for him.
"L you look like you've seen a ghost"
He looked up from his desk, finding one of the new orphanage workers in the doorway. (Y/n) was her name, and L found her gorgeous to be quite honest.
"Worse. I just realised Maki is 13 now... so she's going to hit puberty any day now..." he sighed.
"Uh oh. Gotta give her the talk?" You laughed.
"Yes! Ugghhh this is going to be so awkward... I mean she's a 13 year old girl who probably doesn't want to hear about 'gross girl stuff' from her 28 year old dad"
Oh poor L, having to face the hardest part of parenthood.
"Have you gotten her a training bra yet?" You asked.
"... shit I forgot about that..."
It was kind of entertaining watching L suffer like this, but you felt pretty bad. He'd only been a dad 3 years after all, and not had proper parents of his own. He probably has absolutely no idea what he's doing half the time.
"Look, it's gonna be awkward there's no way around that. But to make things LESS awkward, how about I take her shopping for all the girly stuff?" You offered.
"Oh god yes please... you're a life saver (y/n)" he sighed in relief.
"Alright I'll organise it for my next early shift end. But you'll still have to give her the talk, you are her dad"
"I know, but how the hell do I explain it all without making it weird? And what if she ends up one of those girls with horrible cramps? How do I fix that? What if she gets really bad acne and gets self conscious about it? I don't want her to be so upset over it..."
He was definitely overthinking here. He was going through every possible bad situation in his head and convincing himself it'll happen. The classic dad worry, poor L. You couldn't help but sigh at his sorry state, finding it adorable he cared so much for her but hilarious he was getting so worked up over everything.
"L, listen" you said.
He looked up at you, desperate for any kind of help.
"Just be straight forward. Tell her this is going to be kind of gross but you need to explain it so she understands what's going to happen. She loves you just as much as you love her, she'll understand. If anything she'll probably find your panic funny. There's no way around it being kind of awkward but it needs to be done so she doesn't wake up one day with wicked cramps and thinks she's dying" you explained.
You were right, he just had to suck it up and do it. Maki was a smart girl, she'd understand. In fact you're we're probably right about her finding his worry funny as well. She found humour in all of L's strange habits so she'd absolutely find him stammering over awkward moments hilarious.
"Can't you do this for me?" He asked.
"You're her dad" you replied.
"Fuck you're right. I have to be a parent here. But... thanks for taking her shopping I know nothing about sizing that stuff"
"Oh there's no way I'm letting your clueless ass try and figure out how adjustable straps work"
With newfound confidence thanks to your help, and a weight off his chest knowing you'd handle the shopping he had no choice but to get up, be a good dad and explain to his daughter the suffering she unfortunately had to go through as a teenager. And of course, you had to just casually stand outside the door and evesdrop...
"Ok, I need you to pay attention here Maki because this is going to be awkward for both of us" L began.
"Ok? What's up?" She replied.
"(Y/n) is going to take you shopping sometime next week for some uh... girl stuff. Because I'm just a clueless man who has no idea how fitting and sizing works..."
"What kind of girl stuff?"
There was a moment of silence and you could hear L sigh as he mentally prepared himself for this.
"So... now that you're 13, some uh- stuff is going to start happening..."
