L x Reader oneshots 1 // series 3 • Death Note

Rating all my L books for my 10 year anniversary

So... it's been 10 years writing on this platform... BRO TF YOU MEAN ITS BEEN 10 YEARS?!?! Jesus Christ what is time. In that time I've written 22 books on L (excluding my first one so bad I deleted it) so uh,,, yeah autism really got me there huh. That and the fictive in my brain who for a while I wasn't even aware existed but still felt the influence of. So I'm gonna rate ALL my L books (expect this one bc it's still ongoing). Feel free to rate them in the comments yourself, I won't be offended by bad ratings, some of these ARE bad because I was a dumb teenager who didn't have writing skills yet.

LET US BEGIN THE BEATDOWN OF TEEN ME'S WRITING SKILLS.

ONESHOTS SERIES 1:
L x reader oneshots - 3/10
I mean it's my first oneshot book, obviously it's not gonna be good. I was what, 14? Still new to fanfic and still learning writing skills. So it's not great. Chapters are way too short, it's really fucking cheesy and used a lot of overdone fanfic tropes, badly. Hadn't gotten the hang of things yet, didn't know how to accurately characterise L yet etc.

More L x reader oneshots - 4/10
Same criticism as last book, except it gets an extra point because I did start making longer chapters. Not all of them were long, but I did start realising that longer was better. Not too long of course, but more than 1000 words at LEAST for a oneshot.

Even more L x reader oneshots - 5/10
Clearly these first three were slow progression. I still hadn't gotten characterisation down yet, but the chapters were longer and I was using less cliche tropes. It was around this time I started doing longer full length fics too, so that definitely helped me improve with length and consistency. But still, not perfect by any means.

ONESHOTS SERIES 2:
L x reader head canon-oneshots 1 - 5/10
I was getting there, by now chapters were long enough to be actual oneshots and not a damn micro shot. But I hadn't quuiittee gotten out of fanfic cliche prison yet. But you can definitely see slow improvement from here.

L x reader head canon-oneshots 2 -7/10
There we go, much better. Decent length, less tropey and cringe, more accurate characterisation. Still not perfect, but much better.

L x reader head canon-oneshots 3 - 7/10
I'd say this one's the same as the last one, I'd finally started getting the hang of things. Still room to improve, but not bad by any means.

FULL STORIES:
Fallen Angel - 4/10
Oooh boy. My first full length L fic... and damn it's bad. Stealing concepts from other anime, heap of cliches, bad characterisation, the works. I think about deleting this trash all the fucking time, but for some reason people STILL read it so I keep it up just so I don't delete it while someone is mid read. But gods, this is ass. It only has points because there WAS some semblance of a cool concept with the reader becoming a shinigami at the end and being willing to die to save L and prove Light was Kira. But the execution sucked. Nice try 14 year old me, but you sucked at this.

Case file L Lawliet - 7/10
This was an odd one actually. I started it, dropped it for like a year halfway through and then picked it up again. So the first half is a bit lacking compared to the second half, but it's not bad. Focusing on the other cases outside Kira, LABB and Blue Ship, good idea. Kira is all people write about because it's the main case of the show, so a fic about L and reader PRE-Kira was a fresher concept. Explores childhood besties to lovers romance, the other cases, the wammys kids dynamics etc. I'd change some of the earlier chapters, but overall not awful.

Ethereal - 8/10
My most popular book!? Only 8/10!?!? Mainly because there's a few points I'd change to be less cliche. Other than that though, it's my most popular for a reason. Soulmate AU, mythology, cheating L's death, L getting to scream at Light for all he's put the world through? People love that shit and I loved writing it. If I'd left a few of the more corny parts out, it'd be a 10/10.
