Wei Ying waited until the everyone else was asleep before climbing into Lan Zhan's lap.

They both sighed with contentment; this skin contact had been much missed by both of them. Lan Zhan smiled into his hair, kissing it softly. His red ribbon tangled between his fingers, and Lan Zhan wanted to look at it forever.

"Have you realised something, Lan Zhan?" Wei Ying asked, sleepily. He felt so tired.

"Mn?"

"The ones who are following us, the Children of the Tree." He yawned. "They only do the whole dart thing at us when we stray further than Zhitiao. So that means she's still valuable to them, which then makes her valuable to us."

"Mn."

"So, Lan Zhan...do you think they'll try to rescue her? Or why haven't they yet?" He yawned again.

"Sleep."

"But Lan Zhan, I really wanted to talk to you. I've waited the whole day...and now I'm too tired..." his voice was a soft whine.

"We can talk tomorrow. Sleep." Lan Zhan began humming their song.

"No fair..." Wei Ying mumbled before falling asleep.

Lan Zhan smiled at the beautiful man in his arms, so trusting and innocent yet so clever in other ways. He too, had missed being alone together with him, even though it had only been around five days since they'd left Cloud Recesses. It pleased him no end that Wei Ying missed their home as much as he did; because it meant that Wei Ying was happy there. Happy to live there, with him.

Perhaps it was a residual fear from their days of before, how he would watch Wei Ying walk away from him, apparently happy to do so. But now, after learning from him how difficult it had been, he had new respect for this lovely man. If their positions were switched, would he have been able to walk away? With that much swagger, as if it meant nothing, when the truth was a total opposite?

He lay Wei Ying down and curled into him, listening to his heart beat, and falling asleep to that much missed sound.

In the morning, Li XiWang accompanied Wei Ying to look for berries and fruits in the forest. They did not go too far, always in sight of Lan Zhan and their campsite. They had some dried food stuff from their visit through the last town before they came here, but Wei Ying found he had lost his appetite for meat, opting to eat the food more like what was on offer in Cloud Recesses, preferring it over his usual fare.

Li XiWang had stopped suddenly, cocking her head to listen.

"Father? Do you hear that?" She whispered.

She stepped forward, and this time, Wei Ying also listened attentively.

There was silence, until the noise came again. Li XiWang crept forward, as quiet as could be. The noise was louder now, a soft mewl. She parted the undergrowth to reveal a bundle of white fur and the prettiest blue eyes she had ever seen. She gasped and pointed. Wei Ying looked to see the kitten, for that is what it was, cowering and trembling.

"Li XiWang, go ask Hui Gai for some meat. It's probably hungry." He urged her.

She ran back to the campsite and returned, seconds later with bits of dried meat.

She crouched down next to Wei Ying.

"Here, like this." He took a piece from her little hands and put it next to the kitten, close enough for it to be able to smell the food.

They were not prepared for the kitten to attack the piece of meat so ferociously, wolfing it down in one bite. They kept it up, adding a piece every time the kitten finished one.
