Lan Zhan was in a meeting. Wei Ying had decided to be good and wait for him. He sat down on the steps, leaning against a pillar.
Soft lips on his woke him up and he smiled when he saw his husband. His hands crept up to hold the warm face, beautiful like carved jade.
Lan Zhan kept his eyes closed, long lashes resting on the palest ivory cheeks, and Wei Ying sighed into the kiss, feeling his returning smile. He blushed, with the realization that this, this is where he belonged. This was where they both belonged.
Everything he felt, he poured into this kiss, the meeting of two separate souls that were really just one.
"Lan Zhan, my love." Wei Ying smiled, their lips still connected.
"Mn?"
He could feel Lan Zhan smiling.
"I was wondering, how busy are you today?"
"Free afternoon."
"Really?" Wei Ying threw his arms around his neck.
"Mn. Really." There was laughter in his voice.
"You're much happier these days."
"Mn."
"May I ask why?"
"Wei Ying."
"Me?"
"Mn."
"But I have been here for so long. And you've only just now become happier."
"Not true. Was happy then, Am happier now." Lan Zhan kissed his nose.
Wei Ying giggled.
Lan Zhan loved the way he laughed. It was melodious and fun and happy.
Wei Ying should always be happy.
"I love you Lan Zhan."
"Mn. Wei Ying is loved." It was the way he said it.
The truth of it.
Deep inside those golden orbs, only love resided, only his.
So he didn't know why he was crying.
"I...I-I.. I'm not sure why I'm like this..." Wei Ying tried to wipe his eyes, but he was doing such a poor job, Lan Zhan took over.
The pure white sleeves were amazingly absorbent. And then he was held close for comfort.
"Why is Wei Ying upset?"
"Huh?"
"Mn."
"Lan Zhan... I'm not upset. I just was overwhelmed because... because I believe you."
The arms around him tightened.
"Wei Ying did not believe? Before?" He didn't sound at all happy now.
"No...no that's not what I meant." Wei Ying sighed, listening to the familiar heart beats. "For a long time, I...I found it hard to believe that anyone could love me."
Lan Zhan couldn't bear this. He pulled him back so he could look into Wei Ying's face, but what he saw made him incredibly sad.
"Wei Ying is loved." He exclaimed fiercely.
"I know...I know that now. But before...when I was in Lotus Pier, things were... different. But I'm better now." He finished brightly.
He stood up, still holding his hand.
"Look at me, I'm forgetting why I came here in the first place." He laughed awkwardly. "Li XiWang is waiting for us. She wants to try something new."
Lan Zhan paused, staring at him. Wei Ying was still full of hurts, little ones that had become bigger and bigger. Madam Yu had a lot to answer for. All those barbed words, all those insults, they made his heart hurt just from hearing about them, but how much worse would it have been for the recipient?
He knew Wei Ying had had a tough time growing up as head disciple of the Jiang Clan. They often heard stories of his many various punishments, and the inevitable kneeling in the Ancestors room. But the violence...no-one knew the true extent.
Wei Ying was a master of cheerfulness, of how to portray happiness where none existed. Who could he have talked to, when he felt alone? Who was there for him? Who looked after this lonely boy, starved of love for so long, he had trouble believing he was worthy?
His heart stuttered painfully, bringing tears to his eyes.
"Don't cry for me, Lan Zhan." Wei Ying whispered, watching him.
He came up to him and wiped those beautiful eyes, sighing.
"You were so happy before, but I made you sad."
Lan Zhan couldn't say anything. The words were stuck in his throat, and Wei Ying needed him.
So he kissed him.
"At this rate, we're never going to leave here." This time, it was a genuine laugh. "Come on."
Wei Ying led him back to the Jingshi.
Li XiWang came running towards them as they neared.
"Are you ready, little rabbit?" Wei Ying picked her up and whirled her around.
"Yes I am!" She laughed.
When he put her down, she grabbed both their hands and they started walking up into the mountains.
"What shall we do today, fathers?" She asked excitedly.
"Well, I was wondering if you were able to control other elements? We've tested water and earth, what about fire? Light? Wind?"
If Lan Zhan was panicking, he hid it well.
"Don't worry, little rabbit, we'll start small."
"Mn." Lan Zhan reinforced.
Wei Ying smiled.
They walked to a different part of the woods this time. Wei Ying had brought three cushions this time, which they all sat upon.
He pulled out other supplies.
"Now let's begin."
