They were walking back from the library, and Wei Ying was in a surprisingly good mood. Lan Zhan's hand felt warm and comfortable in his, slightly bigger than his own, but sweetly encompassing his with a firm grip.
He held up their joint hands, staring at the beautiful, slender fingers, only slightly paler than his own, and calloused at the tips.
These fingers had been through so much, had worked so hard to bring them together, that he was in awe of the sheer dedication of his husband.
"Lan Zhan..." he breathed out softly.
They stopped walking.
Lan Zhan turned to face him, and then came closer, golden eyes watching him carefully.
"I...I need something from you." Wei Ying tried hard to swallow the lump in his throat.
"Anything."
"You don't like it when I say thank you. And I get why...I mean, I was incredibly...bad at seeing your true feelings. And I only said thank you at the end of our meetings before...but, my love...I want to say sorry, too." He didn't even know why he was suddenly crying.
Maybe it was the result of the suppression of his feelings in the library, or the fact that his heart hurt like nothing else, every time he thought of those in between years. The time when he left Cloud Recesses for the first time and his death, falling from the clifftop in the Nightless City.
The times that he thought Lan Zhan hated him. When it was the furthest thing from the truth.
Right now, he was brought into the safety of those strong arms, held closer and comforted. Lan Zhan kissed his hair, patting his shoulders gently.
"You may say I love you. The thank you can be silent." His deep voice echoed into his ears.
"What about sorry?" Wei Ying held onto his waist tightly.
"Wei Ying has nothing to apologise for. Must not." Lan Zhan kissed his wet eyelids, followed by his nose, which never failed to make him giggle, and finally claimed his sweet, sweet lips.
"I love you." Wei Ying whispered, when they parted.
"Mn. I love Wei Ying. Always."
"Can we go and see Uncle? I want to ask him something." Wei Ying smiled when Lan Zhan nodded.
They knocked on the door and waited patiently for Uncle Qiren to open it, well, patiently for Wei Ying, who rocked back and forth on the balls of his feet.
Uncle Qiren must have been frowning when he came to the door, but when he saw Wei Ying, it fled from his face, forming a reluctant smile.
After they sat down at the table, and Lan Zhan had poured tea for everyone, Uncle Qiren turned to him.
"Why has Wei WuXian been crying?" He asked sternly.
Wei Ying quickly wiped his eyes with his sleeves.
"Oh, it was nothing, Uncle, really!" He answered hastily.
"I am asking him." Uncle replied, his tone a little sharp.
Wei Ying shut up immediately. His fingers crept towards Lan Zhan's hand, curling between his in a show of solidarity.
"Wei Ying was remembering the past." Lan Zhan replied.
"Ah." Uncle Qiren turned his attention back to Wei Ying. "Then, it seems I also have something to apologise for."
Wei Ying never, ever thought he would hear those words from Lan Zhan's Uncle.
