You were supposed to be on your way to a Valentines dinner with your boyfriend, who you couldn't seem to get rid of no matter how much you hated him. Your mother loved him, your father loved him; literally everyone loved him except for you. Ironic, isn't it?
Instead, you were trapped in a brutal storm in the middle of pretty much nowhere, at a lone gas station. Honestly, you weren't sure if you were mad at the weather since you could use it as an excuse not to show up, along with the closed road. At the same time, though, you'd gotten soaked just by running into the building to pay for your gas.
"This is ridiculous," you muttered, noting how few people there were as you wrung out the bottom of your shirt on the carpet in front of the glass door. Unfortunately, you never watched the weather forecast, so you weren't aware of the terrible rain that would hit the area.
"Didn't see the weather report?"
You jumped at the sound of a man's voice nearby. You looked up to see him observing you with a kind smile. You were wary, but still answered to be polite despite the fact that you were most certainly not in the mood for it.
"No, I didn't."
"Well, is there anything I could get for you? I work here," he offered, still smiling despite your rude tone of voice.
"I just need to pay for gas," you stated.
"Sure thing!"
He went behind the counter and you followed. You paid for the amount you needed and almost left the building, but you decided to grab a few things since the drive home would be a long one. It also slipped your mind to text your boyfriend, so you pulled your phone out and went to your messages.
