Marlene was seriously getting tired of hearing Lily rant about Potter. She looked over at Alice and mouthed,
"Third time this week."
Alice smiled and mouthed,
"Fourth."
Marlene rolled her eyes and went back to 'listening' to Lily.
"And his hair is just... ugggggh. He's arrogant, and a bully and, and,"
Lily continued.
"And you like him. We get it, Lils, just go ahead and confess your undying love already!"
Marlene joked. Lily glared at her but smiled.
"Who's confessing their undying love to who now, McKinnon?"
Marlene heard a familiar voice behind her.
"Black."
She whipped her head around. He was smiling.
"Go on ranting about Prongs, Evans. I just need to talk to Marlene."
Sirius told Lily. Lily sighed and turned to Alice.
"Hey Sirius. What's up?"
Marlene asked.
"So it's pretty obvious that James loves Lily, it's been like that since third, fourth year?"
Sirius asked.
"Yeah."
"And it's starting to seem like Lily fancies James, right?"
Marlene nodded.
"Meet me under the large birch tree by the lake, midnight."
Sirius said and walked away.
"Now how am I supposed to get there- SIRIUS COME BACK HERE!"
Marlene called. She sighed. Sirius.
"Speaking of confessing undying love, when are YOU going to get with Black?"
Alice asked Marlene.
"Yeah, Mar. It's common knowledge what you two do together."
Lily added.
"We're friends. Just friends."
Marlene told them.
"Friends who make googly eyes at each other and occasionally snog in broom cupboards?"
Alice raised her eyebrows.
"Yeah. F R E N D S. Wait, F R I E N D S. I think. Just- you, you get the point! We aren't dating."
Marlene defended herself.
"Yeah, what ever."
Lily smirked.
"Let's get to class."

Marlene stared at the clock for hours. Lily and Alice had already fallen asleep, and Mary was in the hospital wing with pneumonia, so she had to stay there over night. At 11:30, so she would have time to figure out a plan, she snuck out of the girl's dormitory and into the common room. It was dark, so she pulled out her wand.
"Lumos."
She whispered. The room quickly lit up, showing Sirius right in front of her. She gasped in surprise.
"Hello."
He grinned.
"Don't do that!"
Marlene stepped back.
"Nice pajamas."
Sirius smirked. Marlene rolled her eyes. She was wearing a large t-shirt with a Puddlemere United logo on it and some shorts. They weren't that short. Okay maybe... but thats not the point.
"Why do we need to meet at the tree if we're here?"
Sirius looked confused.
"Why not?"
Marlene sighed.
"Okay, let's go."
Sirius pushed open the door to the common room.
"This way. Follow me, and we won't get caught."
Sirius motioned at her.
"You sure about that?"
Marlene laughed. She closed the portrait hole. Sirius was walking faster than her.
"Wait up!"
She whisper called.
"Slow poke!"
Sirius whispered back. Marlene sighed and rushed forward. They sneaked through the hallways and down the stairs for about five minutes until Sirius came to a window.
"Okay, I'll go first."
He stepped onto the window sill.
"See ya!"
He fell backwards.
"Sirius!"
Marlene said with worry. She leaned over the window. The drop was about ten feet.
"Sirius!"
She called.
"Right here!"
Sirius called from the ground.
"Jump, I'll catch you!"
Marlene hesitated. She stepped onto the window sill and jumped. Her hair flew back as she fell to the ground. Sure enough, Sirius caught her, but the pair of them rolled onto the ground.
"How are you not dead?"
She asked. Sirius held up his wand.
"Aresto Momentum. Breaks falls. Did it right before I jumped."
He looked proud of himself.
"Wow. Question, how do we get back in?"
Marlene asked.
"We'll get to that later. C'mon, to the tree!"
Sirius raced off across the grounds. Marlene dashed after him. Sirius made it to the tree first, and sat down.
"You're slow, McKinnon."
He said.
"Your legs are longer than mine."
Marlene retorted.
"Yeah, what ever. But about Lily and James."
Marlene nodded.
"I think we should get them together at the next Hogsmeade trip. You and Alice can lead Lily to the willow tree right by the fence near the shrieking shack, Remus and I'll get James over there. We leave then alone in the calm atmosphere, and they're sure to at least not fight with each other."
Marlene nodded.
"It's a start."
Sirius rolled over onto the grass so he was staring at the stars. Marlene watched him intently. Everything about him was perfect. His eyes were shining brightly, like storm clouds that had sunlight just behind them. He had a lingering smile on his face, like he was thinking about a happy thought that no one else knew. His hair was almost lost in the grass.
"Are you going to keep staring at me like that?"
He suddenly asked.
"Oh, sorry! You're just- I mean, it's just,"
Marlene stuttered.
"I get that a lot."
He smirked. Marlene sighed. She walked over and sat next to him.
"These stars are the same ones that we'll see next year, when we're out of Hogwarts and off fighting death eaters. They may guide us back home, or lead us to our deaths."
Marlene said.
"You see that star right there? It's the brightest one. Where ever you are, and remember you're not alone."
Marlene looked up.
"Hey, isn't that-"
Sirius abruptly sat up.
"We'd better be getting back to the castle, right?"
He asked.
"Uh, yeah, I guess."
Marlene stammered.
"Great! I'll show you how to get in."
Sirius stood up. Marlene watched him as he turned around, looking for something.
"Ah! There it is."
She followed him as he walked over to a dock on the black lake.
"Right here. Secret passage way, takes you to right outside of Gryffindor Common Room."
He pointed to a large hole under the dock.
"Why didn't we take it to get here?"
Marlene asked.
"It's a one way passage. You can get out, but you can't get in from the portrait it leads to."
He jumped into the hole.
"Let's go!"
Marlene climbed down. She followed Sirius through the damp passage. He stopped.
"Can you hear that?"
He asked.
"What?"
There was a rumbling sound coming from the ceiling.
"Run!"
He shouted as the passage started to cave in. Marlene and Sirius sprinted forward through the dust falling from the ceiling. Marlene saw Sirius look back and grab her hand. He yanked in forward and pulled her to his side.
"Is that as fast as you can go?"
He yelled.
"No!"
Marlene felt a surge of energy. She grabbed Sirius' hand and rushed forward faster than she ever had before. Before she knew it, they were tumbling out of a portrait into the hallway in front of Gryffindor common room. They both looked shaken up.
"Okay we're both riding on adrenaline and this might be a mistake in future retrospect, but as you can tell you never know when we might die in this world, especially now since we're entering a war, so-"
Marlene put her hands behind Sirius's head and kissed him. She didn't expect him to grab her waist and lift her off her feet a few inches, but it happened. They pushed away after what felt like too little time, and stared at each other.
"Let's-let's get in before we're caught by Filch or someone."
Marlene said.
"Yeah."
Sirius nodded.
"Unless... if we get caught they'll have to tell our parents, right? Wait till my mother hears I snogged a muggleborn."
Sirius smirked.
"Though, I'll be doing it all the time from now on."
He added.
"I think that is the worst pick-up line ever, Sirius Black."
Marlene laughed as they woke up the Fat Lady.
"Chinese Fireball."
The Fat Lady scowled at them but still let them in.
"Um, earlier, when you said to always look to the certain star... that was,"
Marlene started.
"Sirius. That was Sirius. Sounds like one of those stupid romance novels, doesn't it?"
Sirius scoffed. Marlene shook her head.
"How many romance novels have a main character who is also the brightest star in the sky? You know, that goes both way. Even if this doesn't work out, we're still friends. As long as you see your namesake star, know that you may be alone, but you're not lonely."
