A note to feminists who refuse to consider liking Harry Potter because the most powerful characters are men:
Who is the smartest student at Hogwarts? Hermione Granger. A girl. Did she act slutty and try to get with Harry AND Ron? No, in fact, she didn't even care when a very famous Quidditch player took interest in her. Stop reading the OOC fanfics. Yes, Ginny Weasley dated a LOT of guys, but who do you think was in control in those relationships? They were equal, or Ginny took a stand. She dumped that Ravenclaw who was a sore loser after Gryffindor beat them at Quidditch. Seventh year, SHE is the one who kissed Harry. Why do you think Ron has so many stories about how "Fred and George turned my bear into a spider or made me make an unbreakable vow or gave me an acid pop?" It's because they couldn't mess with Ginny. Ginny used her brothers' brooms when they didn't know and became a very good Quidditch player. Half of the Gryffindor Quidditch team are girls! All the chasers in the first book, Angelina eventually becoming captain. Sure, Harry's the youngest seeker in a century, but Ginny can seek AND chase.
Moving on. Look me in the eye and tell me Minerva McGonagall isn't a powerful character. What about Molly Weasley? Yes, Harry Potter, a male, is the chosen one, but he's only alive because Lily, not James, sacrificed herself for him. James protected Harry and Lily, but it was Lily who saved Harry. And on the opposite side, Bellatrix Lestrange is just as powerful as Voldemort. Honestly, if Bellatrix wasn't in love and slightly afraid of him, she'd be the Dark Lord. Make a few horcruxes, build an army, and voila. Bellatrix isn't the Dark Lord because she enjoys killing too much, Voldemort only kills those he finds worthy.
And to the marauders era. Tell me Lily isn't powerful. The number of times she told James "no"... But don't say that James didn't respect her decision. Not respecting her decision who be forcing her, not causally trying to get her to say yes, and being more mature so she would reconsider. She's also a smart character. She accepts people for who they are. So the marauders are all male and in many fanfictions Sirius is a player who takes advantage of some girls, but Lily is a strong influence on that era. Gryffindor's best at potions!
And now, Order of the Pheonix.
NYMPHADORA TONKS. You want girl characters who defy social standards? Her hair is short, she's athletic, she's a fighter, she's the one who really made the first move in her relationship with Remus, and she's not in the main group that all the main characters are in. (ex., Gryffindor, Dauntless/being Divergent, District 12, Thunderclan, Dragonrider, Jedi, Runner, etc. Congrats if you got all those references.) Face it, Tonks is badass.
You're going to hate me for the next bit.
Dolores Umbridge. The only person to leave a scar on Harry other than Voldemort himself. Dictator of Hogwarts, higher than Dumbledore at the time. And female.
Still think the most powerful characters are men? Here's more evidence women are powerful in the series, BOOK BY BOOK.
Philosopher's Stone: Hermione, amazing quotes. Brightest witch of her age.
Chamber of Secrets: Molly Weasley in the flying car scene. Enough said. Hermione, CREATED POLYJUICE POTION AS A SECOND YEAR. Ginny, though possessed, still opened the Chamber of Secrets. Just saying.
Prisoner of Azkaban: TIME FLIPPIN TURNER. So technically Hermione's a whole year older than Harry and Ron because time didn't stop for her... I'm going into detail in another chapter now. She figured put Lupin was a werewolf when no one else did!
Goblet of Fire: Rita Skeeter ruined some reputations, and had the power to do so. Fleur was a triwizard champion. And S.P.E.W. SPEW!
Order of the Pheonix: Tonks, just being Tonks. Umbridge, being scary powerful. McGonagall, standing up to that. Would you like a cough drop? We meet marauders era Lily telling James NO. Luna, being creative and not caring what anybody thinks about her.
Ginny. Hermione. Luna. They all join Neville and Harry and Ron at the department of Mysteries, don't they?
Half-Blood Prince: Ginny and Hermione are part of the Slug club. Tonks makes the first move in her relationship, and Fleur marries Bill, no matter what anyone says.
Deathly Hallows: Hermione and Fleur polyjuice into Harry and risk their lives. Hermione obliviates her parents so they're safe. She goes with Harry and Ron and stays, no matter what.Ron returns, and she isn't all fairy princess "oh I love you and missed you" she's all warrior "you complete arse i'm cursing you to hell and back for leaving" Hermione destroys one of the horcruxes. McGonagall is amazing in the Battle of Hogwarts, and that's putting it lightly. Tonks fights alongside Remus, to make a better world for Teddy. Lily stays with Harry until the very end.
AND SO MUCH MORE
BUT WAIT WAIT WAIT WAIT WAIT
WAIT
Feminism isn't girls are better than boys. It's girls are equal to boys. Guys do awesome things too. It's just many feminists don't want to read Potter because the powerful characters are men. NOT ALL OF THEM OKAY
ITS EQUAL
ITS AMAZING
AND IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT BECAUSE THE MAIN CHARACTER IS A GUY
YOU NEED TO CHECK YOUR DEFINITION OF FEMINISM
Use this for anyone who says Harry Potter is sexist.
