By the time they got back to the tent, Fred and George are cheering about the Irish team and the money they will be getting from Bagman because they won the bet.

Hermione, Lily and Ginny go into their tent whilst the boys go into their tent. They quickly get changed into their pyjamas before getting into bed. "I'm glad that's over. Fred and George wouldn't shut up for weeks about this," Lily tells the girls.

"I know. All Ron was talking about was Bulgaria this, Bulgaria that. It was getting quite annoying actually," Ginny says but nothing else is said between the girls before Hermione and Ginny drift off to sleep, leaving Lily awake, staring at the ceiling, and alone with her thoughts.

However, the next thing she knows is that someone is yelling at her to wake up. "Get up! Lily – Hermione – Ginny – come on now, get up, this is urgent!"

Lily wakes up, startled before turning her head to see Mr Weasley stood at the door of the tent, his face full of horror.

The noises in the campsite have changed. The singing has stopped. She can hear screams, and the sound of people running. She slips off her bed and reaches over from some jeans to put under her top. "Lily, get the girls awake and dressed. I'm getting the boys up!" Mr Weasley says before she sees his shadow disappear into the next tent.

Lily shrugs a jacket on and slips some suitable shoes on before grabbing some clothes for the girls and throwing them at them, causing them to wake up. "Come on. Put those on and get outside, quickly," Lily says before running out of the tent.

By the light of the few fires that are still burning, she can see people running away into the woods, fleeing something is moving across the field towards them, something that is emitting odd flashes of light and noises like gunfire. Loud keering, roars of laughter and drunken yells are drifting towards them; then comes a burst of strong green light, which illuminates the scene. A crowd of wizards, tightly packed and moving together with their wands pointing straight upwards, is slowly marching across the field.

Hermione and Ginny come hurrying towards her, pulling their coats over the rest of their clothes, with Mr Weasley right behind them. At the same moment, Bill, Charlie and Percy emerge from the boys' tent, fully dressed with their sleeves rolled up and their wands out.

"We're going to help the Ministry!" Mr Weasley shouts over all the noise, rolling up his own sleeves. "You lot – get into the woods, and stick together. I'll come and fetch you when we've sorted this out!"

Bill, Charlie and Percy are already sprinting towards the oncoming marchers; Mr Weasley runs after them. Ministry wizards are dashing from every direction towards the source of the trouble. "C'mon," Fred says, grabbing Ginny's hand and starting to pull her towards the wood with Lily, George, Harry, Ron and Hermione following after. They all look back as they reach the trees. The coloured lanterns that have lit the path to the stadium have been extinguished. Dark figures are blundering through the trees; children are crying; anxious shouts and panicked voices are reverberating around them in the cold night air. Lily pushes herself faster to catch up with Ginny, Fred and George.
