Seulgi's POV
"When we, with my mom's siblings and family, went to my grandparents' house to surprise them because that was their wedding anniversary, we heard them talking about our family in their backyard. We discovered that was their plan why our business sank.""Why did they do that?" Joohyuna asked incredulously.
She was already looking at me in shock when I looked at her. "From the very start, my grandparents didn't like my dad for my mom."
She frowned, "Why?"
I looked in front again. "It's because my grandparents are affluent. So they got mad when they found out that their daughter had a child in her womb with a man who was not wealthy and from the orphanage, and the job was a police officer. It also added that my mom didn't finish her studies because I was already in her womb when she was in her third year of college. She just finished that year and didn't continue her studies even though my dad persuaded her because my mom said she wanted to focus on me. My grandparents didn't support their relationship even once or even go to my parent's marriage. Only my mom's siblings and their families went there. Neither did my grandparents give my mother any inheritance or money after my parents got married. But even though they don't have a good relationship, my grandparents treated me and my younger sibling well. We're actually close to them. Nevertheless, every family gathering, my parents didn't attend because we knew it would cause chaos. So only me and my sister went there."
"What happened when you found out that your grandparents were the ones who caused that on your business?"
"Mom's siblings couldn't believe it and reprimanded them, while Mom was so furious that day, as well as me and my sister. Who wouldn't? My parents built that business when they got married, and my grandparents just ruined it simply because they wanted my dad to stay away from us. That day, we also discovered that my grandparents threatened my dad by saying they would not stop ruining our business if he didn't leave us. They also said they would make sure my dad would get fired from his job if he didn't listen. After we knew the truth, my mom returned all the money my grandparents gave to help our business rise again. I also wanted to give back the motor my grandparents gave me, but my mom paid for it because she said I needed it for my studies. After that, my mom went to the police station where my dad was working to get him back again, but she saw my dad happy with someone else there. My mom didn't get mad at my dad. Instead, she kept blaming herself for why my dad found someone else. She thought my dad gave up because he was already tired of her parents and what was happening to our lives. But my sister loathed my dad when she knew that."
That was why Yeji didn't use my dad's surname and used my mom's surname instead. She literally wanted to change her name because she didn't want to have a connection with our dad even if it was just a surname, but my mom didn't let her. So she just told her agency not to tell her real name to the public because she doesn't want to be asked about not using it and talking about our family in public. And luckily, her agency agreed.
"What about you? Are you mad at him?" She carefully asked.
"I'm not mad at my dad but at my grandparents who ruined our family." I sighed heavily. "And because of what happened, our house became lifeless again. And it hurt me when I saw them melancholy again." So now, I don't want to see a woman around me looking down because it reminds me of my mom and Yeji and all the painful memories that we faced. "But one day, my mom decided to start our business again. She took out a loan from the bank to stand our flower shop on its feet again. And while we were starting up, we ended up in debt because mom also owed money to buy our food and needs and finance my sister's education."
"You stop studying?"
I nodded. "I need to. We had a big amount of debt. So, I had to stop studying and work to help my mom pay for our debts. And because I couldn't use my motor for my study, I used it to make money. One of my co-workers at that time invited me to join the night race. I didn't tell it to mom because I knew she wouldn't allow me to join. But I need to make money, so I decided to join. And about my studies, my mom doesn't want me to stop. She said I might have a problem with the parents of the one I would love, like what happened to my dad. But she let me when I convinced her I would only work for a year and study again."
"Did you do what you said?"
"I can't say I didn't, but I can't also say I did," I answered and chuckled.
"What do you mean?" Her voice filled with confusion.
I glanced at her. "I didn't study after that year, but I didn't work as well. At that time, our business hadn't gotten back on its feet yet, and we still had debts. I don't want to break what I said to Mom, but I also don't want to add to her burdens. So, I decided to perform compulsory military service. And after I finished serving in the military, I didn't study right away even though our business got back on its feet at that time because it was already in the middle of the school year. So, while waiting for the next school year, I worked and joined the night race again because we still had debts to pay. And I still work and race even though I continued to study again to finance my own expenses for my studies. Then, one time, when I was in my third year of college, my grandparents went to our house and asked for forgiveness when they already realized their mistake. My mom and sister forgave them, but I didn't because I still couldn't move on from what happened that time. I love them, but I just couldn't forget what they did to my family. So, I asked my mom not to take anything they would give to us, even my mom's heritage. I wanted my family to be successful on our own, even without their help. My mom let me do what I wanted, and my grandparents respected our decision. And when my vacation came, I was glad when my mom told me that she decided to finish her study."
"Really? That's good to hear." Joohyuna commented with a hint of happiness in her voice.
"Yeah. But I don't understand why every time the sun would about to shine, there was a cloud that would cover it, and the storm came again."
She gasped, "Again?"
I looked at her and saw her a surprised face. I nodded. "When one of my friends had an accident on our race one night, we took him to the hospital. And when I visited my friend the next day, I bumped into Dad. That day, it was his schedule for his treatment. I found out that he had Nasopharyngeal cancer stage three."
