When Rhea had opened her eyes, a groan had admitted into the room as she curled off to the side—But the ache at her temple had screamed in defiance. "Thank Merlin, you're awake."
That didn't sound like Alphard, not at all.
When she turned to look over her shoulder, there she found Maverick, staring at her with those concerned eyes of his.
As if she could expect anything more from him.
"What are you doing here?" She questioned, knowing full well that her elves wouldn't just allow a guest into the master bedroom. But as she rose to sit up, Maverick had disregarded his next set of papers and aided her in her quest to sit up. "Here, drink this."
Whatever thoughts about him being her had upset her, had soon been taken over by the mere fact that ice water had been offered up. And she drank until there was nothing left.
"Rhea—What the hell were you thinking?" Maverick chided, and that is when she began to frown at him. "What?"
"Your vitals showed you were severely dehydrated and running on nothing to eat!"
"I just—I did eat."
"When?!"
"I ate breakfast, and I just finished a muffin before— Shite—I skipped lunch, damnit." It was cruel to blame Alphard or his appointment having taken up her time for lunch, but how could she have catered to him and ordered a meal be prepared while having nothing ready for herself? It was irresponsible at best, and she groaned as she fell back into the pillow behind her. "What time is it?"
"Nearly an hour after your shift ended, I didn't know what to tell your husband."
"Good, don't tell him anything. Otherwise, you really won't have anyone to help you on this floor."
"What's that meant to mean?"
"He wants me to quit, Mav." The wizard had all but gawked at Rhea for even insinuating the mere thought of leaving. No, he couldn't allow that to be an option. Sure, it was selfish, but Rhea was a blessing."Rhea, you saved Jackson's life!"
"I—I did?" Her unsureness had ushered a frown, but as he passed over her charts, she started to see just where the problem lay.
She overexerted herself when she hardly had anything to give."Rhea—I don't want to do this to you, but you're up for a promotion..." Instantly it had caused the witch's eyes to squeeze close as she pushed away her chart.
"Mav—"
"I know, I know. But Willow—Coordinator Willow, is new and doesn't understand common ground. She put you in for it against what I've been trying to tell her."
"She knows about Alphard!" Rhea pleaded, but it hadn't mattered.
Her saving Jackson and upped her invitation for the promotion but it was all pointless.Rhea needed less hours, not more. She needed to keep the workload she has now or else it would send her down another spiral similar to this one.
"You have ten more minutes left hooked up to this unit, then you're free to go home."
"And what do I tell Alfie?" She questioned, her eyes pinning to the unit stuck in her arm as there was a quarter left in the plastic bag just above her head. "'Sorry I'm late, I saved a dying child and fell due to exhaustion. But good news, I've managed to get a promotion I can't even think to take.'" She spat, wanting so desperately to rip off the unit from her arm and just get going, but even now a set of nausea had hit."Running yourself to the ground isn't going to help."
"Then what is?" His advice wasn't sound, but Rhea truly felt desperate for help, for anything to get used to the idea that Alphard may not have as much time as first predicted.
