A/N: just a quick note before you start the book. I would love to hear any comments you all have while reading:) btw at the end of every chapter there is also an authors note. Alright let's get on with our regularly scheduled shitstorm shall we :)
Survival. If my life were summed up by just one word, that would be the one. Even before the world went to shit and the dead were coming back to life. Life has never been easy for me, but I survived this far. I just need to keep trying.
A few years ago I thought I wouldn't need to fight for my life anymore. I had moved to Atlanta with my best friend Glenn, who helped me escape my tragic nightmare. He had always known my home life was terrible, he just never knew exactly how bad it was until the day we moved together. It wasn't the plan for me to follow him to Atlanta, but after seeing me that day he wouldn't take no for an answer. He was more my family than my own actually was.
When the dead started rising and eating people Glenn and I got Separated. So it's safe to say the plan of me never having to fight for my life again, just turned into one big disappointment.
I am used to disappointment though. With a life like mine, it's hard not to get used to it. I did have a few good years. Few. That is the key word there. From birth to eight years old were some great years. That is until the only person who ever loved me died. My father. There was never any funeral. He was just alive one day, and gone the next. Only leaving me with one thing left from him. A locket he had specially made for me with my initials on the front. Immediately after, my mother forced me to move to Kalamazoo Michigan with her. I originally was upset about the move, but it's where I met Glenn.
Quickly after moving my mother found a new husband. After meeting him things changed, she changed. She was no longer the caring mother she once was. Her new husband Hudson, was way worse than she was however. Hudson was always angry about every little thing. The abuse from him wasn't just emotional, but also physical. It hadn't started out that way, but as I got older he got more physical. So when Glenn forced me to move away with him, I had hope.
The world now though, has such little hope. Everywhere I go, all I see is the dead chasing me like I'm a damn filet mignon. Luckily after I moved to Atlanta, I took some self defense classes and got myself a gun. Back then I just wanted to protect myself in case I ever saw my step-father ever again. I didn't realize I would need it for a zombie apocalypse.
The sunlight is almost gone, I need to start making my way back to the cabin I've been staying in for the past week. Tomorrow I'm going to try to find another place to sleep. It's not safe to stay in one place for too long anymore. While walking back to the cabin, I heard a terrifying scream. I usually wouldn't turn around at the sound of another person's cries for help. In today's world, helping someone else could put you at risk. As much as I would love to help everyone, I know I can't do that without killing myself. However for some reason this scream is making me turn around, as if I actually don't have any choice in the matter.
As I turn I discover that the screams are coming from a little blond girl who looks to be about ten years old. She has just now fallen down and two geeks are walking towards her. Trying to chomp on her as if she's a shish kebab. I could easily turn around and try to pretend that I never saw this, but I can't let a little girl die. I just can't.
I ran over to her as fast as I possibly could. When I got to her I pushed one of the geeks out of the way. I then grabbed my knife and stabbed the one that was closest to me in the head. I threw him to the side so I could now attack the one that's coming back at me. I swiped my leg underneath it to make it fall on its front. I then climbed on top of it and sent my knife straight through the back of its skull. I quickly looked around to make sure there were no more geeks headed our way before putting away my knife and turning my attention to the little girl.
