One Month Later

Daryl's POV

I woke up in my cell with my arm wrapped around Mae, with her head on my chest. Half of her copper hair is strewn across her face. She is beautiful. It's hard to believe that someone as amazing as her would ever want a lowlife redneck like me.

With my hand that isn't currently wrapped around her I gently pushed her hair out her face. She always looks so peaceful while sleeping. Sometimes it makes me forget about all of the horrors that lie outside our walls.

I kissed the top of her head, causing her to open her eyes. She is such a light sleeper, which is understandable considering everything she has been forced to face in her life. She tilted her head up so her big blue eyes could meet mine. Her lips curled up into a slight smile, before she nuzzled her head back into my chest. "Mornin' Princess."

"Morning..." She said groggily.

She placed her right hand on my chest right next to her head. My eyes gravitate towards the ring Liam had gotten for her. I know that if he were still here, if he had somehow survived, I wouldn't be lucky enough to be holding her in my arms right now.

Every once in a while I do think about her reaction when we found Liam in Hershel's barn. In the moment, I could see every fiber of her being, breaking. Almost as if she had died with him. That is not the person I see laying on my chest right now. Somehow she clawed her way out of that hole. If anything were to ever happen to her, I'm not sure I'd be able to do the same.

She is the only person in my life that I truly need, and I intent to show her that.

I still need to ask her father for permission to marry her. The more I think about it, I realize I need to ask Glenn too. Her father wasn't around for years, of no fault of his own. In his absence though Glenn was her family. The only family she had that gave a fuck about her. In my opinion, it is just as important to ask him, as Rick.

"I need to get up Mae." I said softly.

"Five more minutes..."

I slightly laughed. "Nah. As much as I love this, I need to get up." She groaned in response, and held onto me tighter. "Mae. If ya let me get up, I promise I'll make it up to ya later."

Her eyes locked with mine again. "How?"

"That I can't tell ya," I started. "but I will."

"Fine." She groaned. "But first...." She scooted herself close to my head, and I leaned in to kiss her. I cupped her face, and pulled her in closer to deepen the kiss. I want to wake up to this every morning for however long I have left to live.

After a minute we both pulled away from the kiss. She rolled onto her side of the bed, clearing me to get up. I looked over at her and heard her soft snores fill the room. For someone who is such a light sleeper, she sure does fall asleep fast if she's tired.

I got out of our bed and put some clothes on before heading down the stairs to grab some breakfast. Sebastian was eating alone while Sophia was eating her breakfast cuddled up to Carl. I get that they're a couple, but I do not enjoy their constant PDA. I sat down next to Seb after I grabbed a bowl of food.

We sat in silence for a few minutes. I care about this kid, but he has more of a connection with Mae than me. It makes sense, but I hope that eventually he'll get closer to me. After all he is my kid too.

"Is Ma still sleeping?" Sebastian asked me. He started calling her his mother about two weeks ago. It was honestly a surprise to all of us, but she welcomed it. I know she believes that she's not a good guardian, a good parent, but she is. She welcomed not one but two children that aren't hers into her family and made them her children. I can tell she loves these kids as if they were her own. she clothes them, feeds them, protects them, and loves them. She's a good mother. A great mother. These kids are lucky to have her. Seb doesn't call me dad yet, maybe one day he will like Soph. Even if he never does though, that's okay.
