By me
The night was buzzing with energy at Camp Half-Blood, where demigods of all ages gathered around the campfire. Music played in the background, laughter echoed across the beach, and the scent of roasting marshmallows lingered in the air.
Annabeth Chase was on her way to join her friends when she spotted Percy Jackson sitting at one of the picnic tables. Her heart sank when she saw who was with him.
Rachel Elizabeth Dare.
Rachel was animatedly talking about something, her hands moving expressively as Percy listened with an amused grin on his face. Every so often, he’d lean closer, saying something that made Rachel laugh.
Annabeth’s eyes narrowed, her stomach twisting in an uncomfortable knot. She wasn’t the jealous type, but seeing them together like this made her heart clench in a way she couldn’t ignore.
Deciding she couldn’t just stand there and watch, Annabeth marched over to them, her strides purposeful. As she got closer, she noticed something strange about Percy. His eyes were a little too bright, his grin a little too wide, and when he spoke, his words were slightly slurred.
"Percy," she said, trying to keep her voice steady, "what’s going on?"
Percy looked up at her, and his face lit up like it was the best moment of his life.
"Annabeth!" he exclaimed, almost knocking back his chair in his excitement. He stumbled a bit as he stood up, clearly not as steady on his feet as usual.
Rachel raised an eyebrow, leaning back in her seat as if to enjoy the show. "Hey, Annabeth," she greeted with a knowing smirk. "I think your boyfriend's had a little too much nectar tonight."
Percy barely acknowledged Rachel as he swayed towards Annabeth. "You’re here," he said, a goofy smile plastered on his face. "I missed you."
Annabeth felt a mix of exasperation and relief. "Percy, how much have you had to drink?"
Percy didn’t answer her question. Instead, he grabbed her hand, his fingers warm and a little too tight around hers. "Did I ever tell you how beautiful you are, Annabeth?" he asked, his voice dripping with earnestness.
Annabeth blinked, caught off guard. "Percy, what—"
"And smart!" Percy interrupted, his other hand now cradling her cheek. "You’re, like, the smartest person I know. I’m so lucky to have you. Do you know that?"
Annabeth felt her cheeks heat up, not used to Percy being so forward, especially in front of others. She opened her mouth to respond, but Percy wasn’t done yet.
"And, Wise Girl," he continued, his tone suddenly serious, "you’re the only one for me. No one else even comes close."
She was speechless. This wasn’t the first time Percy had expressed his feelings for her, but there was something about his uninhibited confidence and the way he looked at her, like she was his whole world, that left her at a loss for words.
Behind them, Annabeth heard a stifled laugh. She glanced over Percy’s shoulder and saw Piper, Hazel, and Jason watching the scene unfold with barely concealed amusement. Piper’s eyes sparkled with mischief, Hazel was grinning ear to ear, and even Jason looked like he was trying not to laugh.
"Percy," Annabeth began, trying to regain her composure, "you’re drunk."
Percy shook his head, his expression one of utter sincerity. "I’m not drunk. I’m in love," he declared, his voice loud enough to make a few other campers glance their way. He pulled her closer, wrapping his arms around her waist. "You’re my Wise Girl, and I’m never letting you go."
Annabeth felt her heart swell at his words, even as she rolled her eyes. "Percy, you’re going to regret this in the morning."
"Regret loving you?" Percy scoffed, as if the idea was preposterous. "Never."
Piper finally lost it and burst into laughter, quickly followed by Hazel and Jason. Annabeth shot them a look, but even she couldn’t suppress the smile tugging at her lips.
"Alright, Seaweed Brain," Annabeth said, gently extricating herself from his embrace. "Let’s get you back to your cabin before you embarrass yourself even more."
"Only if you promise to stay with me," Percy said, his eyes pleading.
Annabeth sighed, but her smile softened. "I promise."
As she led him away, Percy kept mumbling sweet nothings, much to the continued amusement of their friends. Annabeth couldn’t help but feel a little smug, knowing that even in his inebriated state, Percy’s feelings for her were as clear as day.
As they walked off into the night, Annabeth realized that there was no reason for her to be jealous. Percy was hers, completely and utterly, and he wasn’t afraid to let the world know it—even if he was a little drunk while doing so.
