By me.
The snowstorm had taken everyone by surprise. It was supposed to be a normal day at school, but now the entire building was snowed in.
With no way to get home, the staff had hastily arranged for the boys to sleep in the cafeteria and the girls in the gym. It wasn’t ideal, but everyone was too tired to complain.
Percy lay on the cold cafeteria floor, staring up at the ceiling. His mind drifted to Annabeth. He wondered if she was as uncomfortable as he was, or if she was already asleep. She was always better at dealing with this sort of stuff.
Suddenly, the sound of footsteps echoed through the cafeteria, growing louder as someone approached him. Percy sat up, recognizing the worried expression of one of the teachers, Mrs. Jones.
“Percy, we need you in the gym. It’s Annabeth.”
At the mention of her name, Percy’s heart dropped. Without another word, he jumped up and followed the teacher out of the cafeteria and down the hall.
As soon as they entered the gym, Percy could hear it. Annabeth’s cries, panicked and desperate, filled the room. “No… Percy… no…”
His stomach twisted. The other girls were huddled around her, looking concerned but unsure of what to do. Annabeth was tossing in her sleeping bag, her face wet with tears. She kept murmuring his name.
Without hesitation, Percy sprinted toward her.
“Annabeth!” He knelt beside her, gently shaking her shoulders. “Annabeth, wake up.”
But she didn’t wake. Her cries only grew louder, her voice breaking. “Percy… no… Luke… please…”
Percy’s heart clenched. Luke. He knew exactly what she was dreaming about.
He did the only thing he could think of. He lifted her up, cradling her against his chest, holding her as tightly as he dared without waking her too roughly. “Shhh, Annabeth, it’s okay. I’m here.”
Her breathing was ragged, and she was still crying. Percy ran a hand through her hair, whispering softly in her ear. “I’m here, Wise Girl. I’m okay.”
It took a few moments, but slowly, Annabeth’s thrashing subsided. Her eyes fluttered open, red and swollen from the tears, her breathing still uneven.
“Percy?” she whispered, her voice trembling. She reached up, as if to touch his face, to make sure he was real.
“I’m here,” he said gently, brushing a tear from her cheek. “I’m alive, Annabeth. It was just a dream.”
Annabeth burst into fresh sobs, clinging to him as if she might lose him again. “Percy… you… Luke was… stabbing you in your Achilles spot… I thought you were gone… I-I couldn’t do anything.”
Percy tightened his arms around her. “Shhh, it’s okay. I’m right here, safe and sound. You don’t have to worry. I’m not going anywhere.”
Annabeth buried her face in his chest, her sobs slowly quieting. “I was so scared…”
“I know,” Percy whispered, his voice soft and soothing. “But you’re safe now. I’m safe. Nothing can hurt us here.”
For a while, they stayed like that, Percy rocking her gently, letting her tears soak into his shirt. The other girls, who had been watching in stunned silence, began to relax as Annabeth calmed down. A few exchanged glances but stayed quiet, giving them space.
Eventually, Annabeth’s breathing steadied, her eyes growing heavy again. Percy laid her back down in her sleeping bag, smoothing her hair away from her face.
“I love you, Wise Girl,” he whispered, his voice barely audible, as she drifted back to sleep, her grip still tight on his hand.
Annabeth murmured something in her sleep, her voice no longer filled with fear. Percy stayed by her side, unwilling to leave.
He didn’t care about the cold floor or the stares from the others. As long as Annabeth was okay, that was all that mattered.
And in that moment, as he watched her sleep peacefully, he knew she would be.
