By me.
The next morning at Camp Half-Blood, things were... awkward, to say the least. Percy and Annabeth both arrived at breakfast with an unusual stiffness in their movements, clearly avoiding each other.
Every time one got even remotely close to looking at the other, they turned away, faces flushed a bright red.
Percy plopped down at the Poseidon table, trying to act normal, but his mind was racing. Just act cool. Totally cool. Nothing happened.
But as soon as his eyes accidentally found Annabeth across the pavilion, his face turned beet red, and he quickly shoved a spoonful of cereal into his mouth to cover up the awkwardness.
Annabeth wasn’t faring any better. At the Athena table, she was unusually quiet, her gaze fixed firmly on her food as she pushed it around her plate.
She could feel Percy’s presence like a warm weight nearby, making her heart beat faster than she wanted to admit.
Why did I say that? Why did he say that? She risked a quick glance in his direction and—yep, he was looking away just as quickly, his face just as red as hers.
Unfortunately for them, their friends weren’t oblivious.
"Uh, what’s up with you two?" Thalia smirked, eyeing both Percy and Annabeth suspiciously. She was sitting with Nico and Grover, who both shared knowing looks.
"Yeah, you guys are acting weird," Nico added with a raised brow.
Percy quickly stuffed more food into his mouth, avoiding eye contact with everyone. "Dunno what you're talking about."
"Right," Grover said, his eyes twinkling mischievously. "You just look like you’re about to melt every time you accidentally look at each other."
Annabeth’s spoon clattered against her plate, her face flushing again. "No, we don’t."
"Sure you don’t," Thalia teased, leaning back in her chair. "So, what happened last night, hmm? Something romantic under the stars?"
Percy nearly choked on his cereal. "W-what? No! Nothing happened!"
Annabeth shot him a glare, but she was equally flustered. "It was nothing. Just... we were talking, that’s all."
"Talking, huh?" Nico grinned, crossing his arms. "Is that what they’re calling it now?"
"Yeah, sure. Talking late at night alone in the Athena cabin," Grover chimed in, waggling his eyebrows. "Sounds real innocent."
Percy groaned and buried his face in his hands, while Annabeth wished she could disappear into the ground. The more their friends teased, the more the memories of the night before resurfaced—Night, Annabeth, love you... Love you too, Percy.
Annabeth and Percy shared a brief, embarrassed glance, and just like that, both turned redder than ever.
"Wow, you two are terrible at this," Thalia said with a laugh, clearly enjoying their discomfort. "You could at least try to act normal. I mean, we get it—you lovebirds finally admitted it."
"Stop calling us lovebirds," Percy muttered, still hiding behind his hands.
"Yeah," Annabeth huffed, crossing her arms. "It was just... a slip of the tongue, okay?"
"Oh, sure," Nico said, smirking. "Just a slip of the tongue. That’s how it always starts, right?"
Percy and Annabeth exchanged another mortified glance as their friends continued making dirty jokes at their expense. Percy was tempted to just dive into the lake and stay there for the rest of the day, but unfortunately, the teasing only got worse as the morning went on.
As they sat through their sword-fighting drills, Percy could hear Grover and Nico whispering behind him.
“Bet they were, you know… real close,” Nico muttered, nudging Grover.
“Oh yeah, definitely,” Grover agreed, grinning.
Percy shot them a glare. “Can you guys shut up? Nothing happened!”
But the smirking never stopped, and the teasing wasn’t going away any time soon. Percy just hoped they’d survive the day without combusting from embarrassment.
Meanwhile, Annabeth was already planning how to avoid every private conversation with Percy—at least for a while.
