By me.
For days, Percy couldn’t escape Thalia’s relentless teasing. Every time they crossed paths in the school halls or shared a lunch table, she’d find a way to nudge him toward asking Annabeth out.
“Percy, you’re pathetic,” Thalia said with a smirk as they stood by their lockers. “Annabeth’s not going to wait forever, you know. She’s got guys lining up for her.”
Percy rolled his eyes, though the butterflies in his stomach multiplied every time Thalia brought up Annabeth. “Yeah, thanks for the confidence boost.”
Thalia grinned mischievously. “I’m not wrong. You’re just scared.”
“I’m not scared,” Percy shot back defensively, though the uneasy feeling in his gut said otherwise.
“Then why haven’t you asked her out?” Thalia raised an eyebrow, daring him to come up with an excuse.
Percy bit his lip, glancing down the hall where Annabeth was at her locker, deep in conversation with one of her friends. Her long blonde hair was tied back in a ponytail, and she wore a look of concentration as if solving the world’s most complex problem.
“I just don’t want to make things weird between us,” Percy muttered. “She’s your friend. What if she thinks it’s awkward?”
Thalia gave him a look that could melt steel. “Percy, Annabeth is the least awkward person on this planet. You’re the one making it weird. Just go ask her already.”
Before he could respond, Thalia gave him a hard shove in Annabeth’s direction. Percy stumbled forward, his heart racing. He shot Thalia a glare over his shoulder, but she just smirked, clearly pleased with herself.
Taking a deep breath, Percy walked toward Annabeth. Every step felt heavier, like his feet were made of lead. What if Thalia was wrong? What if Annabeth turned him down, or worse, laughed at him?
But as he got closer, he remembered Thalia’s words from the other day: She’s not like our dads. She won’t just walk away.
Gathering every ounce of courage he had, Percy finally reached Annabeth. Her friend gave him a quick glance before excusing herself, sensing the tension in the air. Now it was just the two of them.
Annabeth looked up from her locker, her stormy gray eyes meeting his sea-green ones. “Hey, Percy. What’s up?”
For a moment, his brain went blank. Okay, breathe, Jackson, he told himself. He could feel the weight of Thalia’s gaze from across the hall, practically daring him to chicken out.
“Uh… hey,” Percy began, mentally kicking himself for sounding like an idiot. “I was, uh, wondering if maybe you’d like to… grab a coffee sometime?”
Annabeth’s eyebrows raised slightly, and Percy’s heart immediately started hammering in his chest. Was that a bad move? Did she even like coffee?
But then, to his complete and utter shock, Annabeth’s face broke into a smile—a genuine, warm smile that made his knees feel weak.
“Are you asking me out?” she asked, a hint of amusement in her tone.
Percy swallowed, nodding. “Yeah… I guess I am.”
Annabeth chuckled softly, closing her locker and turning fully to face him. “About time.”
Percy blinked, not sure he heard her correctly. “Wait… what?”
Annabeth smiled wider, her eyes sparkling. “I’ve been waiting for you to ask me out for a while now.”
His heart skipped a beat. “You have?”
“Percy, you’re not exactly subtle,” Annabeth said with a smirk, crossing her arms. “And you’re kind of cute when you’re nervous.”
Percy’s brain struggled to catch up with the fact that Annabeth had just called him cute. “So, um… is that a yes?”
Annabeth laughed, a soft and melodic sound that made Percy’s heart soar. “Yes, it’s a yes. I’d love to grab coffee with you.”
A wave of relief washed over him, and Percy couldn’t help the goofy grin that spread across his face. “Great! That’s… that’s great.”
“I’ll be expecting a decent spot. None of that cheap stuff,” Annabeth teased, but there was warmth in her eyes that made Percy feel like he could float.
“Don’t worry. I’ll figure something out,” Percy replied, feeling more confident now that the hard part was over.
As Annabeth gave him a smile and walked away, Percy turned around, only to find Thalia watching from down the hall with her arms crossed and a victorious smirk on her face.
“Well, well, well,” she said as he walked back over. “I didn’t think you had it in you, Jackson.”
Percy gave her a half-hearted glare. “You pushed me into it, literally.”
“And you’re welcome,” Thalia replied smugly. “Told you she’d say yes.”
Percy couldn’t help but laugh, feeling lighter than he had in days. “Yeah, yeah, you win.”
Thalia leaned back against the lockers, a satisfied look on her face. “You owe me one.”
“Fine,” Percy said with a grin. “Next time you’re crushing on someone, I’ll return the favor.”
Thalia scoffed. “As if I’d ever need help with that.”
They both laughed, and as they headed toward their next class, Percy realized just how lucky he was to have Thalia by his side. Even through all the teasing, she had always believed in him, always knew what to say to push him out of his comfort zone.
And now, he had a date with Annabeth Chase, all thanks to his cousin.
“Don’t screw it up,” Thalia added, her voice teasing but with an undertone of genuine affection.
Percy rolled his eyes. “Thanks for the vote of confidence.”
“Anytime.”
