Of Markers And Monsters

By me.

It was supposed to be a relaxing day at Camp Half-Blood. Supposed to be. But when Percy Jackson and Annabeth Chase were around, chaos wasn’t far behind.

"Percy, stop moving!" Annabeth groaned, holding up a bright blue marker. She had been trying to explain the architectural plans for the new Olympus monument, and Percy had made the mistake of dozing off halfway through.

Now, she had decided to illustrate the importance of staying awake during her lectures—by doodling on his arm.

"I’m not moving!" Percy protested, though he was, in fact, squirming like a fish out of water.

Annabeth sighed and continued drawing what looked suspiciously like a Cyclops wearing glasses. "I can’t believe you fell asleep again."

Percy gave her his most charming grin, trying to distract her from the fact that she was currently turning his bicep into a canvas. "You know, Wise Girl, it’s not my fault your voice is so soothing. You should do a podcast."

"Yeah? I’ll call it ‘How to Annoy Your Boyfriend in Ten Easy Steps.’" She added another doodle, this time a tiny owl wearing a Camp Half-Blood shirt.

"Hey!" Percy frowned. "Is that supposed to be me?" He pointed to a particularly goofy-looking stick figure wielding a trident.

Annabeth smirked. "Maybe. But, if you keep complaining, I’ll draw something worse."

Percy gasped in mock horror. "You wouldn’t dare."

"Oh, I would." She raised an eyebrow, her mischievous grin growing wider. "Maybe I’ll draw a sea slug next, or perhaps Triton—"

Before she could finish, Percy lunged at her, grabbing the marker from her hand and holding it victoriously above his head. "Not so fast, Wise Girl. Time for a little revenge!"

Annabeth quickly darted away, dodging his attempt to scribble on her arm. "Percy! No!"

"Why not? It’s only fair!" Percy laughed, chasing her around the Athena cabin, marker still in hand. "I’m thinking… I don’t know, a shark? Maybe a hippocampus?"

"You wouldn’t!" Annabeth squealed, but her giggles betrayed her amusement.

"I think I would," Percy said, managing to catch up to her and gently pin her against the wall. He grinned down at her, the marker poised in his hand. "Okay, Wise Girl. Last chance."

"Percy, if you draw on me, I swear I’ll—"

"What? Design me another boring monument?"

Annabeth narrowed her eyes playfully. "I was going to say I’ll leave you on the Argo II next time a monster shows up."

Percy’s eyes widened. "What? You wouldn’t leave me!"

Annabeth leaned closer, her face just inches from his. "Try me."

Percy blinked. "Okay, fine. I won’t draw on you." He tossed the marker aside and leaned in to kiss her cheek, thinking he’d won the battle. "But you owe me a—"

Suddenly, Annabeth grabbed the discarded marker from the ground and swiftly drew a line across his cheek. "Gotcha, Seaweed Brain!"

Percy looked at her, stunned for a second, before breaking into a wide grin. "You’re the worst, you know that?"

"And yet, you still love me," Annabeth said, smirking as she capped the marker.

"Yeah, yeah." Percy rolled his eyes and wrapped his arms around her. "I love you, even when you turn me into a walking sketchbook."

Annabeth smiled softly and rested her head on his chest. "Good, because I’m never letting you live this down."

"Great. Can’t wait to see what the campers say when they see this," Percy said sarcastically, motioning to the doodles on his arms and cheek.

"Well, you could always wear long sleeves," Annabeth teased.

"In the middle of summer? No thanks. I’ll just tell everyone it was an art project gone wrong." Percy sighed, looking down at the masterpiece Annabeth had left on him.

Annabeth chuckled, her arms still around his waist. "Or you could say a monster attacked you."

"Yeah," Percy said, smiling as he kissed the top of her head. "The most dangerous monster of all—my girlfriend with a marker."
