The stars glittered overhead, and the cool breeze from the sea whispered across the empty beach. Percy lay on the soft sand, staring up at the constellations, feeling the quiet hum of the ocean just beyond. It was peaceful here, almost too peaceful, given all they had been through. But this was their place. Just him and Annabeth.
Annabeth rested beside him, her head on his chest, fingers lightly tracing patterns on his arm. Percy could feel the warmth of her body pressed against his, and even though they'd shared moments like this before, it still made his heart skip a beat.
"You're quiet," she said softly, her voice like a melody against the backdrop of the ocean. She tilted her head slightly to look at him, her grey eyes reflecting the starlight.
"Just thinking," Percy replied, shifting so he could better see her face. Her golden curls framed her features perfectly, and in the dim light of the moon, she looked almost ethereal. "About how you always look at me like I'm a puzzle you're still trying to solve."
Annabeth smiled, a gentle laugh escaping her lips. "That's because you are a puzzle, Seaweed Brain. A very simple, yet surprisingly complicated one."
Percy grinned, turning onto his side so he could face her fully. He reached out, brushing a stray curl away from her face. "I think you're just saying that to mess with me. I'm pretty sure I'm the most straightforward guy you've ever met."
She raised an eyebrow. "Straightforward? You? Please, you're as unpredictable as the sea."
"Is that a compliment?" Percy asked, his hand lingering near her cheek, thumb brushing her skin softly. The closeness between them always made the world disappear, like it was just the two of them, suspended in time.
Annabeth rolled her eyes playfully but leaned into his touch. "Maybe it is. But don't get too cocky."
Percy smirked, feeling a surge of boldness. He shifted closer, their faces now mere inches apart. "I don't know. I think you like my unpredictability."
She laughed again, softer this time, a sound that made his heart do somersaults. "I think I've gotten used to it. It keeps life... interesting."
There was a beat of silence as they simply stared at each other, the waves gently crashing in the background. Percy's hand slid down from her cheek to her neck, his thumb brushing her jawline. He could feel the warmth of her breath against his skin, the slight rise and fall of her chest as they lay there, just soaking in the moment.
"You know," Percy murmured, his voice low, "I never thought I'd get to have moments like this. Just... being with you."
Annabeth's eyes softened, the usual sharpness in her gaze melting into something more tender. "Me neither," she whispered. "But I'm glad we do."
Percy leaned in, his forehead resting against hers. "I love you, Wise Girl."
Annabeth smiled, the kind of smile that made his whole world brighter. "I love you too, Seaweed Brain."
Their lips met in a soft, lingering kiss, the kind that said everything without needing words. The stars above seemed to burn a little brighter, the waves a little softer, as if the universe itself was giving them this perfect moment.
When they pulled away, Percy pressed another quick kiss to her forehead, his heart swelling with the kind of warmth he only ever felt around her. Annabeth nestled closer into his chest, her fingers intertwining with his.
They lay in comfortable silence for a while, listening to the rhythm of the sea. Percy could feel her heartbeat against his own, and for the first time in what felt like forever, he wasn't worried about monsters, quests, or prophecies. It was just them, here, now.
"You ever wonder," Annabeth said after a while, "if the Fates had this planned for us?"
Percy chuckled softly. "Maybe. Or maybe they were just throwing us together because they knew I needed someone smart to keep me alive."
Annabeth snorted. "Good thing you've got me, then."
He kissed the top of her head. "Good thing, indeed."
As the night wore on, they stayed wrapped in each other's arms, watching the stars. Percy felt like he could stay here forever, just him and Annabeth, under the endless sky.
And for now, that was more than enough.
