By me.

It had been a week since the incident with Poseidon, and Percy was convinced that enough time had passed for a return trip to Montauk with Annabeth. They figured they’d find another secluded spot—far enough away from any water this time, to avoid a repeat of Poseidon’s little surprise visit.

The sun was just beginning to set, casting that familiar, peaceful glow over the waves. Annabeth leaned into Percy’s side as they walked along the beach, her fingers loosely interlocked with his.

“We’re really tempting fate again, aren’t we?” Annabeth mused, shooting Percy a playful glance. “You’re sure your dad won’t pop up again?”

Percy laughed nervously. “He’s got better things to do than play chaperone for us. And besides, we’re not doing anything wrong.”

Annabeth raised an eyebrow. “You sure about that?”

Percy grinned and pulled her close, leaning in for a kiss, but just as their lips met—

“Ahem!”

Both froze. Percy’s heart sank instantly as he recognized that voice—not the deep, booming voice of his dad, but the stern, unmistakable tone of his mom.

“Sally!” Annabeth blurted, pulling back from Percy in shock. They both turned to see Sally Jackson standing a few feet away, arms crossed and looking very unimpressed.

“Mom, I—I didn’t know you were here!” Percy stammered, his face turning an impressive shade of red.

“Oh, I’m sure you didn’t,” Sally replied, raising an eyebrow. Her voice was calm, but the disappointment was clear. “I thought you were just coming here to relax, maybe take a walk. I didn’t think ‘make out on the beach’ was part of the plan.”

Annabeth winced, giving Percy a sympathetic glance before stepping in. “Mrs. Jackson, we were just—uh—”

“About to stop?” Sally finished, though the hint of amusement in her tone made it clear she wasn’t that angry. “I think we should have a little chat about public displays of affection. This beach isn’t as private as you think.”

Before Percy could respond, the water a few feet away shimmered and Poseidon emerged once more, his eyes twinkling with even more amusement than the last time.

“Oh, this just keeps getting better,” he said with a wide grin, looking between Percy, Annabeth, and Sally. “Caught in the act again, son?”

Sally shot him a sharp look. “Poseidon.”

Poseidon raised his hands defensively. “I didn’t encourage it, Sally. Though I can’t say I’m not enjoying watching Percy squirm.”

He turned his gaze back to Percy, who looked like he wanted to melt into the sand. “Really, Percy, two times in one week? You’d think you’d learn.”

Sally let out a sigh, her expression softening as she looked at her son. “Percy, you’re growing up, I get that. But you’re still my son. I don’t need to catch you like this… again.”

Percy swallowed nervously. “I’m sorry, Mom. It won’t happen again.”

Annabeth, still standing beside him, nodded quickly. “We’ll be more careful next time.”

Poseidon chuckled, giving them both a knowing smile. “Oh, I’m sure you will. Or at least you’ll try.”

Sally rolled her eyes at Poseidon’s remark but couldn’t hide the small smile tugging at the corner of her lips.

“Let’s just say we’ll give you two some space—somewhere else.” She gave Percy a look that clearly meant ‘don’t test me again,’ before turning toward Poseidon. “And you should be setting a better example.”

Poseidon laughed lightly, putting an arm around Sally’s shoulders. “You’re right, my dear. But you have to admit—this is a bit entertaining.”

Sally sighed exasperated, though she didn’t seem too upset anymore. “Maybe. Just don’t let it happen again.”

Percy and Annabeth shared a quick glance, their faces still flushed with embarrassment but relieved that the worst seemed to be over.

“Message received,” Percy said quickly, grabbing Annabeth’s hand as they awkwardly shuffled past his parents. “We’ll, uh, just go for that walk now.”

As they walked off down the beach, Poseidon’s voice echoed behind them. “Stay out of trouble, Percy! And remember, I’m always watching!”

Annabeth let out a small laugh as they got out of earshot. “You’ve got to love your family, Seaweed Brain.”

Percy groaned but couldn’t help smiling. “I swear, next time, we’re going somewhere inland.”
