By me.
Percy stood in the living room of the Camp Half-Blood cabin, hands on his hips, his face a mixture of disbelief and indignation. The sunlight filtered through the open window, illuminating the green leaves of a fake plant that sat innocently on the windowsill.
“Four months!” he exclaimed, pointing dramatically at the plant as if it had personally betrayed him.
Hazel looked from Percy to the plant, then back to Percy, confusion etched on her face. “What’s he talking about?”
Annabeth, perched on the couch with her laptop, looked up, eyebrows raised. “It’s really not that big of a deal…”
Percy’s eyes widened as he turned to her, incredulous. “Not a big deal? You stood by and watches me water a fake plant for four months!”
Annabeth couldn’t help but laugh at the absurdity of the situation. “I thought it was just a funny little thing. I didn’t think you’d take it so seriously!”
“I took it seriously because I wanted it to grow!” Percy gestured wildly, as if he were trying to convey the sheer depth of his frustration through hand motions alone. “I spent hours researching how to take care of it! I even looked up the right watering schedule!”
“Dude, it’s plastic,” Hazel interjected, still trying to wrap her head around the situation. “How did you not realize it was fake?”
“Right?” Annabeth chuckled, shaking her head. “I mean, it’s not like it was ever going to bloom or anything.”
Percy threw his hands in the air. “I thought it was just slow-growing! I mean, I’ve dealt with Greek mythology, monsters, and gods! How was I supposed to know I was nurturing a piece of plastic?”
“Maybe because it didn’t change at all in four months?” Hazel said with a smirk. “Like, I’m pretty sure plants have some sort of growth, even if they’re not real.”
Percy flopped down on the couch beside Annabeth, exasperated. “You all just let me believe I was doing something good. I was trying to make our cabin more homey!”
Annabeth leaned in closer, a playful glint in her eyes. “I didn’t want to ruin your enthusiasm. Plus, watching you water it was kind of funny. You were so committed!”
“Committed?” he echoed, sounding both hurt and amused. “I was trying to be a responsible demigod! How was I supposed to know you were all secretly laughing at me?”
“Hey,” Hazel said, trying to be serious, but unable to hide her grin. “You brought joy to a plastic plant. That’s impressive.”
Annabeth nodded, her expression softening. “And it shows how much you care. It’s sweet, really.”
Percy rolled his eyes but couldn’t hide his smile. “Yeah, well, next time you could at least tell me I’m watering a piece of trash instead of letting me waste my time.”
Annabeth chuckled, nudging him with her shoulder. “Don’t worry; I’ll make sure to break it to you gently next time.”
“Next time?” he repeated, raising an eyebrow. “What do you mean next time? I’m not taking care of any more fake plants!”
“Fine,” Annabeth said with a laugh. “But how about we get a real plant? One that you can actually take care of?”
Percy perked up at the suggestion, his enthusiasm returning. “Really? You mean it?”
“Of course,” Annabeth replied, leaning back on the couch. “But just so you know, you’re still in charge of watering it.”
Percy groaned playfully as they all burst into laughter, the tension breaking as Percy felt the warmth of friendship surrounding him. Maybe it had been a ridiculous mistake, but in the end, it only made their bond stronger.
