"I'm a beast, yeah, I'm a monster. I knew beauty then I lost her in a coma; can't defrost her. Can't you see that I'm an imposter?

Miguel's POV

"I think I should talk to Sam about Kyler," I decide as I sit with Hawk and Demetri before first period. "I felt kind of good helping him out with those frat guys, but I know she hates him - and I don't blame her for it. I don't want to, like, keep it a secret, you know?"

"Yeah, it's a bad idea to not tell her," Demetri agrees with me. "And if she is mad, you always have that jewelry store I used to buy things for Yasmine at."

"Yeah, okay," I humor Demetri. There's no way I can afford anything else from there.

"You guys know Veronica?" Hawk completely changes the conversation as he looks over at the girl named Veronica as she stands with her friends.

"Kind of?" Demetri questions.

"I think she's in a class or two of mine. Why?" I ask curiously.

"We talk in class sometimes. She's funny and hot." Hawk pulls up her Instagram on her phone to show us a bikini picture from over the summer. He's right, even though she's not really my type. She has long black hair and is perfectly tanned. "I'm thinking about asking her out. What do you think?"

"I think it's a good idea," I say supportively.

"Yes, you should make a move. Finally move on from Moon and Zion," Demetri agrees. Then he adds, "Not that they're bad."

"We know what you mean," I assure him. I'm really glad the days of him and Zion hating each other are behind us.

"Okay, okay, yeah," Hawk reassures himself as he stands up.

"What," I ask in surprise, "now?"

"You struck first with Sam, right? Look how that ended up," he says before walking over to Veronica.

"He's been on this confidence high ever since a college girl flirted with him at the frat party last night," Demetri explains.

I smile and glance over at Hawk as he talks to her. Veronica isn't smiling, though. And it doesn't take long for Hawk to walk back over to us with an embarrassed look on his face.

"Oh no," I say, "what happened?"

"She said no," Hawk shakes his head in dismay and sits back with us. "No big deal, I guess."

"Is she dating someone right now?" Demetri wonders.

"No."

"Then what was it?" I ask.

"She said that she just got out of a relationship and wasn't ready to start dating again," he sighs. "It's just weird because I checked her Insta to make sure she wasn't dating anyone or even had recently been with someone."
