"Will we ever learn? We've been here before. It's just what we know. Stop your crying, baby, it's a sign of the times. We gotta get away."

Robby has his headphones on while I sit on his floor and finalize my applications to UC Santa Cruz, The University of Bridgeport, and NYU. I'm really nervous, quite honestly, but I have to do this before we leave for the Sekai Taikai or else I won't have a chance at nearly as many scholarships.

My transcript really is a mess, and my essay is so basic. I tried to sit down and write anything about my dad or Janice or overcoming Cobra Kai or anything like that and just... couldn't. I couldn't allow myself to be so vulnerable on a page like Miguel. So I turned in a mediocre essay to my English teacher and got a B, and that's what I'm turning in now. I'm just not ready to put it all out there.

Congratulations! Your application has been submitted to UC Santa Cruz.

Congratulations! Your application has been submitted to The University of Bridgeport.

Congratulations! Your application has been submitted to NYU.

I tap Robby and he looks up at me and takes off his headphones. "I did it," I tell him with little enthusiasm in my voice.

"You did it," he says happily. "I'm so proud of you."

"Yeah," I nod. "I guess we'll see."

I start to get back into bed when Miguel texts me.

Miguel to Zion: Hey can you come over to my mom's for a second?

"I'll be right back. Miguel wants to talk to me," I tell him. He just nods.

I walk outside and see Miguel standing between our complexes looking devastated.

"Hey, what's up?" I ask.

"Stanford deferred me," he says.

"Oh no. I'm so sorry, Miguel."

"I just thought I'd have what it takes to get in, you know?" Miguel says sadly.

"But 'deferred' just means they're just putting off an acceptance, right?"

"Or a decline," he tells me.

"If they decline someone as amazing as you, that's their loss," I tell him, and I mean it. He put it all out there for them to read in his essay.

He shakes his head, "Yeah. Anyway, I just wanted to let you know. Sorry I interrupted your time with Robby."

"You didn't. You're important, too," I tell him.

"Thanks," he nods. "So I'll, uh, let you get back."

"Okay," I shrug.

Miguel turns away, and I can tell he's still sad.

Because I'm not much for physical touch I call after him, "Love you, Miggie."

He looks back with a smile and wipes his tears, "Love you, too, Z. Good night."

"Night," I say before turning back to Johnny's.
