You quietly approached your roommate from behind, intending to startle her. As she released a deep sigh, you grabbed her shoulders and shook them while shouting, "Alcina! I need to ask you a favor!"
Seated at her desk, the tall woman groaned from having her concentration broken. "How are you a college-aged student when you behave like a four-year-old child asking for a cookie?"
You scoffed, thumping her on the back of her head. "Damn, be nice to your girl. You might hurt my feelings. You know I'm an ugly crier."
"Yes, you certainly are. You bawled your eyes out when Rose released Jack in Titanic. How can anyone cry at that scene? They knew each other for less than a week!"
You made a face at her, secretly adoring her analytical and somewhat cynical nature. "Don't go there with me, unless you're ready to hear my one-hour lecture on how Jack could have survived."
She spun around in her squeaky chair, hiding her amusement from you. "No, thank you. I do not have the time for that. What did you want to ask me?"
You beamed at her innocently because you knew she'd have difficulty saying no to you. "Will you come to a party with me tonight?"
She frowned, furrowing her eyebrows at you. "Our exams are this Thursday, and your birthday is the day after."
"Yes, I'll be so relieved once the exams are over with. Then I can relax on my birthday."
She twirled her pen between her fingers, stopping to point its end right at you. "Don't forget I'm taking you out, remember? I will take you to that new restaurant that opened a few weeks ago."
Your heart did a backflip from hearing her say that. Instances like this made you long for her to be more than just your roommate. More than just a friend. "You don't need to do that. It's expensive to eat out these days. You know I'd be happy with pancakes for dinner. We could pick another sappy movie that I know you'll despise and complain about for days. We can share a bowl of buttered popcorn."
She rose from her chair and grasped your hands in hers. "No, I insist on spoiling you. You deserve it. You work hard, and you tolerate my irksome habits of studying late into the night. Allow me to show you a good time?"
With a warm smile, you squeezed the tall woman's pale hands and then let them go. "You flatter me. I'd love that. So, will you come to the party with me?"
"Unfortunately, I cannot. I'm sorry. I must stay. With final exams approaching, I need to focus on my studies." Seeing the disappointment on your face, Alcina stepped closer to you and rubbed your arm. "Hey? I have a surprise for you. It's not yet ready, but it will be when you return."
Your eyes lit up with newfound curiosity. "A surprise? Is it an early birthday gift?"
"Mm, perhaps. You'll find out when you come back. Why are you going to this party, anyway?"
"Donna invited me. She told me I could bring anyone I wanted and, well, I wanted it to be you. But it's okay, I completely understand you. We're going to walk to the party. It's only about fifteen minutes away. I don't intend to drink tonight. I'll just play some games and catch up with a few of the girls. I plan on being back around 10:30 p.m. Frankly? I'm too tired to stay out late. Besides, if you've got a surprise for me, I'll definitely want to come back sooner!"
She mirrored your cheerful grin. "All right, then. Be careful. Text me if you need a ride. I'll be there in a heartbeat."
"I know you will. Thanks. Good luck with your studying. You're going to ace your final exams! You're the most intelligent woman I know, Alci. Beyond a shadow of a doubt, you'll go far in life. Well, I'll see you later."
