Travis' POV
Completely and utterly broken. Shattered glass ricocheting and sinking into the hollow chest cavities. Drowning in the thick clogged throat I choked on, tears burning my eyes as I screamed into the silence that wasn't moving.
I saw Taylor, sobbing out a broken heart that I'd crushed. I saw Taylor bleeding from a knife in my hand. I saw Taylor running to another set of arms for comfort, scared of the face that belonged to me. I saw it all.
My eyes flew open.
Everything was normal. There was light sun coming through the crack in the curtains, cat fur on the end of the bed, birds outside the window, the bedsheets a little crumpled from the night of sleep. And Taylor lay next to me, fast asleep, tangled in her hair.
My heart pounded as I took myself out of my nightmare, rubbing my eyes to find them wet with tears. I quickly brushed them away, not wanting Taylor to know. It was just a bad dream.
A bad dream I'd been having for months now. One that plagued my mind with fear of everything slipping through my fingers and leaving me lost and alone. It played into my fear of loss, telling me Taylor would never stay, that I'd kill her. That I'd ruin her.
I hadn't had that before. Everything had been fine. Taylor and I had been together over two years and all of a sudden, the nightmares assaulted me in my sleep almost every night. She didn't know of course. How could I admit my own brain was torturing me, using her as the knife? She'd feel awful, and I'd feel worse.
Turning over, I wrapped my arms tight around my girlfriend and gently pulled her closer, terrified that something might happen if I didn't have her close. She sighed in her sleep and cuddled up happily, pressing her cheek against my chest. I closed my eyes, resting my face against her hair to inhale her soft scent. Taylor enveloped me like the tightest hug, and I felt better. She always made me feel better even if she wasn't awake to do so.
I drifted in and out of sleep, but eventually I woke up properly when Taylor did. She yawned, rolling onto her back and blinking her baby blue eyes up at me. Those perfect lips immediately curved into a smile, one of her hands lifting to stroke my jaw.
"Hi handsome." Taylor whispered in her sleepy voice. "Good morning."
"Good morning pretty girl." I nuzzled my lips against her neck, kissing softly. Taylor let out a pealing giggle as I did so, wriggling a little like I was tickling her. "How'd you sleep?" I murmured.
"Perfect." Taylor sighed, stroking her fingers through my hair.
We lay there for a little while before getting up for the day, and I started on some breakfast while Taylor fed the cats and opened up all of the curtains to let the light in. It was a pretty nice, slow morning.
"Okay." Taylor sighed, emerging from the bedroom after she'd gotten ready. "I have to get going, but I'll be home around noon. You're going to practice?"
"Yeah, at eleven so I'll be home after you." I nodded. I watched as Taylor reached for her car keys, and I swallowed as a sudden pit in my stomach ached. There was something off.
"Baby." My hand shot out and I grabbed her keys first. Taylor blinked at me.
"What?" She giggled nervously.
"Just...take my car today." I told her.
"Travis, babe what's going on?" Taylor placed her hand on my arm. "Why can't I take my car?"
"I just don't think you should." I pleaded with her.
"Well I have to." She laughed, taking the keys from my hand. "My license plate opens the gates at the office remember? I still haven't registered your new car. I'll be fine." Leaning over, she kissed my cheek. "See you later. I love you."
