Travis' POV
"Nah man, I can't say I don't miss it." Jason sighed, shaking his head, his eyes very faraway as he thought about the past, about the life he'd retired from. "But..." He shrugged, moving back into reality. "It was the right time to step back."
"You think a person will always know when it's time?" I asked, giving a quick glance to the monitor to make sure I was still in frame. I'd shifted my chair, but I was fine.
Not gonna lie, Jason and I were running out of things to talk about on the podcast since we weren't smack in the middle of football events, so this was a little deeper than usual. But it was nice to talk about this end of having a career in the NFl. Jason had a lot more experience than I did.
"I think you will, if that's what you're asking." My brother chuckled with a nod. "You'll know." I nodded, rubbing my jaw as I thought.
We wrapped up the podcast after a little while longer, and then Jason and I decided to do a live on YouTube for a bit. These past few weeks we hadn't done much media, so both of us agreed we wanted to connect a little more with the people who followed along with everything. A decent number started joining as Jason and I sat in my recording room together, laughing and joking and talking.
I always liked it when we could record in the same room together, and I knew Jason did too. We found it so much easier to bounce things off each other.
As we answered a few questions from the chat, the studio door very quietly swung open. My eyes flickered over automatically to see Taylor slipping inside, already turned to close the door behind her. She was making an effort to make as little noise as possible, which was sweet, but we didn't mind too much.
But then she turned around, and the expression on her face made me pause. Jason kept talking, but my eyes were locked on her as Taylor ducked her head. Her eyes were a rough, raw pink, and there was a slight slump to her shoulders. It had only been a couple hours since I'd seen her, and she'd been just fine this morning.
Without a word, Taylor came across the room, walking into frame. Before I could open my mouth to tell her this was all live, she was climbing into my lap, hiding her face by burying it immediately into my neck, still shaking a little with tiny sobs. Shocked, I flicked my eyes over to Jason for a half second, who very quickly and subtly turned the camera that was recording as much as he could so it captured only the very corner of my chair. He kept talking, and I shoved my mic aside.
"Hey sweet girl." I murmured very quietly as Taylor curled up in a ball against my chest, trembling. My arms circled her slender body, holding her close. "What's wrong?"
A few tiny sounds erupted from where Taylor was hiding her face, but I couldn't decipher them. She was far too worked up to talk, crying hard, but somehow almost completely silently. My worry built as I exchanged another look with Jason, who was already trying to wrap up the live as best he could without making it seem rushed.
Taylor's fingers curled into the front of my shirt, gripping tightly like she was trying to hold herself there. I tightened my arms around her body a fraction to make sure she knew there was no way I'd let her go right now, that I had her. Whatever had happened, it must have really hit Taylor hard. She was falling apart in my arms without any indication of what was happening.
"Okay, it's all off." Jason said a few minutes later, letting me know that he'd ended the live, that nothing was recording anymore. "Are you okay Tay, you need anything?"
"M fi-fine." Taylor sobbed, still with her head tucked away, face concealed by her hair. Jason gazed at her sympathetically, and then he looked at me. I nodded to tell him I had her, and he nodded back to let me know to just let him know if he could help.
