Travis' POV

Out of all the places I thought we were going to go for our Psychology class excursion, a mental hospital wasn't what I'd expected. Honestly, I should have known because where else would you find the perfect people to study for our final essay? This was all so weird.

"Okay let's just wait here a moment." Our professor - Kelly - stood up off the front seat of the bus and turned around before we all could stand. "You guys are all third year, so you think you know what to expect, but I'm going to tell you now that some things might shock you in there. We got permission to have a guide in the highest security ward, so we all have to keep to where we're told, and do not engage with anyone other than when you're told you can."

"So we're going in to see the real fucking psychos?" One guy asked, and Kelly sighed at him.

"They require extra security." She said, but it wasn't really a correction. We all knew we were heading in to see the really fucked up people, ones that would probably never leave the place.

We all exchanged looks as we filed out of the bus, all twenty of us kind of nervous even though no one would admit it. Everyone was a third year psychology student so we'd been to places before, but this would be the most intense. I was intrigued though. I wanted to help people.

We had to go through metal detectors, scans, and security before being given a guest bracelet and allowed in past the front lobby. Once everyone was inside, a tall female doctor came and introduced herself as June - the head of the ward we were visiting.

"The patients that I take care of..." June said, exchanging a look with Kelly. "Are in the most secure ward. They're all there for different reasons, but they can all be dangerous, so I don't want anyone getting within arms reach." Someone stuck their hand up, and June nodded.

"Have they killed people?"

"Some of them have." June nodded. "Part of their court sentence was to come here for psychological treatment. They're a danger to themselves, to other people, and we don't want any incidents today." She checked her watch. "If you're interacting with a patient, there's a color code system so you know how to act. If they have a green tag, you can speak to them first and they'll probably have a chat with you. Our oranges can fluctuate between being social and aggressive, so you can try to talk to them but back off if they lash out. If they have a red tag, do not speak to them first." June said firmly. "If they talk to you, then you can respond, but if they don't then you back away. Got it."

A murmur rippled through the group as we all nodded, so she told us to follow her and started leading us away. Kelly walked beside her, the two talking as we traipsed along.

We had to go through so much more security to get to the ward, and once June had gotten us all inside, the door beeped and flashed red. I swallowed as we descended two flights of stairs, and June stopped us all in front of some double doors.

"Okay." She got everyone's attention. "Our maximum security ward is through these doors. If you have anything to ask or you're not sure about something, please ask me. And pay attention to the color tag a patient has before doing anything."

Then she swiped a card, and the doors swung slowly open. We all slowly edged forwards, and then everyone started walking a little further inside. It was a wide hallway, eerily quiet, but I assumed the walls and doors were probably soundproof. Doors lined all the walls with little tags that I couldn't quite see properly from where I was, but none of them were colored. The colored ones were probably inside the doors so we'd have to go closer to check.

I walked slowly down the hallway as my classmates started exploring, a few finding patients to talk to. They left doors open every time they went inside, so soon soft voices were all around. There was the occasional crash or clatter or yell, and every time there was, June would go into that room and sort it out. I didn't pay much attention.
