Chapter 34

After swimming for the whole day, they all settled in the backyard of the summer house, starting a BBQ.

Feng Yichen and Wu Mingze were grilling the meat. Li Chyou and Xiaodan were washing the vegetables and prepping the skewers. As for Zhu Haoran, he was snacking away on the cooked meat while setting the table.

Wu Mingze's parents sat around the bonfire, enjoying their vacation.

"Ming Feng, how was swimming today? Did you have fun?" Zhao Huiying asked her son, who was sitting with them on his phone and occasionally watched his brother as if he wanted to join them in the fun of grilling meat.

"Fun! Really, fun!" Wu Ming Feng said, looking at his mother with a bright smile. "I-I mean, it was okay...," he said, returning to his aloof self.

"Oh, I see," Zhao Huiying said, holding her smile and looking at her husband, who also hid his smile. Soon, everyone held their smiles in and looked at the cute Wu Meng Feng. Both Zhao Huiying and Wu MingTao always found it adorable that Wu Ming Feng would try to act tough to show he was a big kid.

Xiaodan was finally able to take a break after washing all the vegetables and prepping the skewers. She took a seat next to Wu Ming Feng and smiled at him, but he immediately turned his head away, giving her some sass. She just chuckled at his action. Before she could tease him, her bracelet jingled. A small light glowed on the heart-shaped bell.

"Um, excuse me. I have to take a call," Xiaodan said, quickly covering the glowing light with her hand. She rushed to a secluded area, ensuring no one was following her and making sure no one was in sight. Once she knew it was safe, she waved her hand against her bracelet. The tiny light flickered, and a voice came out as it connected.

"Xiaodan?" MengYao called out through her bracelet.

"Hey, what's up?" Xiaodan answered.

"Sorry to disturb you. I just wanted to make sure that you're okay. How are you feeling?" MengYao said with a concerned voice.

"Alright, the table is set," Zhu Haoran hollered.

"Great, some of the meat is ready too," Feng Yichen said with a bowl of cooked meat. "Whoever is hungry now. Come eat," he added, setting it down at the table.

"Mom and Dad, come eat. The skewers and vegetables shouldn't take too long," Wu Mingze said.

"Okay, coming," Zhao Huiying said, patting her husband on the leg before getting up.

"Ming Feng, come. Let's eat," she patted her son's head.

"Mmm," he nodded his head. Before he could stand up, Wu Mingze looked over and scanned around the area.

"Where's Zhao Xiaodan?" Wu Mingze asked.

"Aah.. I think she went to answer a call," Zhao Huiying said, sitting down around the table. Wu Ming Feng glanced to his side and saw Xiaodan's phone lying on the chair.

"Oh, okay, I will go get her," Wu Mingze said, setting the tongs down.

"Ge, don't worry. I got it," he said, grabbing her phone and hurried to the direction she went.

"Aww, thanks for worrying about me, but I'm good now. Everything is fine. Also, thank you for asking Senior Zixin to check on my case. I'm truly thankful. I do hope you two won't get into trouble because of me. You know how we can't help each other with our cases, or we will get punished," Xiaodan said, biting her bottom lip.

"Don't worry about it. With Senior Zixin's level of social power, we'll be fine,' MengYao said, brushing it off carefree.

"But I'm worried about you. I didn't want to say this, but I can sense that you are getting emotionally involved with your case again. Remember, our duty as Cupid's assistants is to complete our assignment, and that's it. No emotion involved whatsoever, so we don't linger," MengYao said, giving her a friendly reminder.

Xiaodan gave a small smile, "Yeah, I know...Sometimes, I can't help it, but thanks for the reminder. I will try my best."

"Okay, good. I have to go now. Take care. See you whenever," MengYao said, ending the call.

Xiaodan gave out a stressed smile before turning back. She immediately froze in place.

"What's a Cupid's assistant?" Wu Ming Feng asked, looking at her.
