This isn't Wonderland

or the Emerald City

we're not stuck in a children's fairy tale

or a heartwarming fable of old

This is a cautionary tale

where the wicked witches are real

the evil sorcerers always win

and happily ever afters almost never come true

Every flower patch

is a bed of thorns

deadly vipers disguised as pretty roses

pricking your fingers with poison

Every wish granted

comes with a lethal cost

dark magic weaved

deceiving you with majestic spectacles

All our bountiful kingdoms

are built on the backs of suffering peasants

dark lords pillaging from ivory towers

harvesting riches with the price of blood

If I was Sleeping Beauty

I wouldn't want you to kiss me

because even my worst nightmares

are less terrifying than being awake
