They told me to gouge out my own eyes
so I wouldn't be able to see the blinding truth
of what was right in front of me
They told me to sow my own mouth shut
because I wasn't allowed to speak differently
from anyone else, even when they knew I was right
They told me to rip off my own arms
so I wouldn't be able to defend myself
from the ones who kept starting fights
They told me to saw off my own legs
so I wouldn't be able to walk away
from the ones who kept holding me down
They always told me to hurt myself
so they wouldn't have to take responsibility
for holding the culprits accountable
