ALONE IN THE WOODS

I walk into the woods

crossing a threshold

into another world

one untouched by manmade corruption

cleansed of violation

released from the burdens

I've carried for far too long

Out here in the vast wilderness

the world feels softer

the tall trees don't look down on me with judgement

the wind doesn't ask me to explain myself

the soil doesn't try to drag me down into the mud

every step I take

is a step away from the harsh pandemonium

echoing violently

from the real world

I never quite belonged in

I don't have to pretend here

I don't have to smile

when I'm crumbling inside

I can be quiet

I can be still

and somehow

that's enough

The moss beneath my feet

feels like a welcome mat

the sunlight filtering through the leaves

isn't cruel or scornful like it is out in the city

it simply brushes lightly against my skin

igniting a gentle, forgotten warmth from within

asking for nothing in return

Even on stormy nights

it comforts me

being alone in the woods

where the grey clouds linger a little longer

dew drips from naked branches

and a misty aroma

fills my lungs

I breathe in the nothingness

and it intoxicates me

The world's chaos dissolves into the atmosphere

the tension in my shoulders eases

the restless chittering in my brain ceases

the ache in my heart is mended

One with the woods

I sink into a bed of fallen leaves

bird songs cradle me

into a rare tranquillity

for a fleeting moment

my daydreams are not an escape

but a blessing come true

It makes society feel like a distant memory

a traumatic incident

that can't haunt me anymore

and I can fade away into the sea of green

lost in a serene silence

if only for a little while
