When I was a kid
you warned me
to stay away from
the manipulators
the liars
the cheaters
the bullies
the fakers
the players
the smugglers
the swindlers
the prisoners
the crazies
the drinkers
the druggies
the neglecters
the abusers...
You listed them off
like monsters under my bed
like shadows I should never speak to
like fires I should never touch
you said they'd ruin me
break me
be a bad influence
lead me down a dark path
that they'd use me up
drain me of everything I'm worth
then throw me away
The older I got
the more I started to see
their sinister faces
looked an awful lot like yours
and it shattered something in me
to realize that all the villains
you told me to fear
were sitting right at the dinner table
grinning with your lips
so tell me again
who was I supposed to be running from?
and why was it always you
I had to escape?
