In a strange way

I'm eternally grateful

for those dark and hopeless years

I got hooked

on illegal substances

I abused them

to escape from reality

and they highlighted

all the bigger issues

I didn't know how to beat

When I got clean

I found a way to confront them

without running towards

another bleak cycle of relapses

or denying the control they had over me
