October spotted August's car pull into the driveway from where she was picking apples at the bottom of her yard. Smiling to herself, she gathered her basket of fruit and returned the stepladder to the shed before going through the back door. August met her in the kitchen when she entered. "Auggie!" She exclaimed and gave him a big hug. "This is a surprise. What are you doing here?"
August pulled away from her hug. "Do I need an excuse to see my baby sister?"
October grinned at him. "Definitely not! Are you staying for supper? I'm making apple crisp. I woke up this morning feeling better for the first time in weeks." August smiled as he watched his sister move around the kitchen. He hadn't seen her smile in weeks and he hated that he was going to cause that smile to disappear in a few short minutes. He let her chatter on for a little while longer. "I had such a craving for Grandma's apple pie but we both know I'm rubbish at making pastry so I decided I would make apple crisp. That tree out back is loaded with so many apples that needed to be picked anyway. And before you get angry at me for being on the ladder, I promise I was careful and I was only on the bottom two wrungs." She stopped abruptly. "Where's Robert?" August leaned against the counter. "He's not with me." October frowned. "Oh." She replied. "I could swear I saw two people get out of your car." She shrugged. "My eyes playing tricks on me. So what do you want to eat? I can make-"
August held up his hand and interrupted her. "Toby, we need to talk." He said in a very serious tone. The smile immediately fell from October's face. "Auggie, I know what you're going to say and I don't want to hear it."
August ran his hands roughly through his hair. "Toby you need to call-"
"August Trouble Hunt, if you utter the words BamBam Brown, I will rip your tongue out and slap you with it."
October turned her back to August and began sorting the apples on the kitchen island. "Now, you're welcome to stay for supper but I don't want to talk about Bam." Her voice grew thick but she kept her back to him. "I just have to figure things out. I have nothing to say right now."
"But what if I do?"
October lifted her head at the sound of Bam's voice and froze. "Damn you, Auggie." She whispered. She refused to turn around to face either of them as Bam stepped into the kitchen. Bam's gaze fell on her body and drank in the sight of her. Even though she had her back turned, his hungry eyes couldn't look away.
"I'm sorry, sweetie." August said softly. "But it's for your own good."
October didn't respond. August looked between Bam and his sister and decided that his part was done. "You two have a lot to talk about so I'm going to leave." He walked over to October and put a hand on her shoulder before making a hasty exit out of the kitchen.
The front door slammed and soon after, the sound of tires crunching on the gravel driveway faded into the distance. "I should kill him for this." October said vehemently.
"Don't be mad at him. Be mad at me." Bam said, still standing in the doorway to the library.
"Do you think I need your permission to be mad at you?" She bit back at him.
"Well, at least now you're talking to me. Even if you're angry, I'll take it." He wanted to go to her and press his palm into the curve of her back.
October dropped her chin to her chest and closed her eyes. Her breath hitched as she spoke. "Bam, I'm too tired to be angry anymore. There is so much going on with you that you won't tell me and there is so much that I need to tell you."
"Then please." He begged. "Turn around and tell me." He urged softly.
Slowly she turned around to face him. Their eyes met briefly before his gaze traveled further down her body. Bam felt all the blood drain from his face as he noticed the unmistakable curve of her abdomen.
