October tried to swat Bam's hands away but was too weak to make much of an impact. He carried her into the library and set her gently on the couch.
She turned towards the back cushions and curled into herself. The tears still fell as she quietly wept.
"Does this happen a lot?" He repeated his question sternly. She slouched her shoulders. "Damn it, Woman! Answer me!" October's eyes sparked. If he wanted to fight then she was damn well and ready for a fight. She was tired, she was grouchy and she was sick. And what better way to enjoy a bad mood than to spread it around? Bam could handle it and he most certainly deserved it.
"Yes!" She snapped. "It happens almost every day. I lost fifteen pounds in my first trimester because I couldn't keep food down."
Bam wanted to smirk. She was so damn cute when she was feisty. "Isn't that supposed to go away eventually?"
"Well apparently, your demon spawn that is gestating inside of me has other ideas." She snapped back.
It was a good thing her back was still turned to him because Bam found it impossible to not smile at that remark.
"Can I do anything to make you feel better?"
October curled her arm over her stomach and her other over her head. Her voice was muffled. "Haven't you done enough? Just leave me alone."
Bam crossed his arms over his chest. "I'm not going anywhere."
October groaned in frustration. She pulled herself off the couch and got shakily to her feet. Bam followed her into the kitchen where she opened a bottle and shook out two orange pills.
"What are you taking?" He demanded as she popped the pills in her mouth and swallowed them dry. He snatched the bottle out of her hand and studied the label. "Are these safe for the baby?"
"What do you care?"
"Would you stop saying that? I do care!"
"How would I know that? The last time I saw you, you were in the arms of another woman and that was six months ago."
Bam sighed heavily. "That wasn't real."
"The thing is, I know it was all scripted but I still saw her hand on your chest where my cheek had lain just an hour before. Weeks later when I learned that we had conceived this baby, do have any idea how much that hurt?"
Bam's eyes turned like flint as he repeated his question. "Are these safe for the baby?"
"You're rather protective over a baby you wanted me to get rid of yesterday. Bam fixed her in place with a hard stare. Her demeanour crumbled slightly and she sighed. "It's just diclectin. It helps with the morning sickness, which usually lasts all day for me. In the beginning I was afraid to take it for fear of hurting the baby but I couldn't even get out of bed without it. I'm down to taking it only once a day now. And yes, it's safe." She turned away from him to start on the makings of tea and toast. "I just need to eat something and wait about twenty minutes for them to take effect."
Bam took the kettle from her hand and gently steered her to sit at the table. She closed her eyes and grimaced as he cleared away the plate of cold, congealed eggs. He made her a new breakfast in silence as they both got lost in their own thoughts.
Minutes later he brought two plates of toast, two mugs and a fresh pot of peppermint tea to the table.
"Thank you." she mumbled quietly as she spread one slice of toast generously with peanut butter.
She noticed Bam watching her. "Peanut butter is the pretty much the only protein I can stomach right now." She explained.
"I'm sure Chef August has something to say about that." Bam quipped.
"Not really." She replied. "Auggie hasn't really been around much. He's been busy with work and doesn't get to the city often. And when he does, he stays at Robert's."
"Oh." Bam replied simply while inside his guilt was growing. She'd been pregnant and sick and alone.
They finished breakfast in silence. Bam noticed the healthy pink colour had come to replace the earlier green tinge of October's complexion. She also seemed to be in a little better humour. She refilled both their teacups and cleared her throat. "Would you like to see your baby today?" She asked timidly. She still didn't know exactly where she, or their unborn child, stood with him and she wasn't even sure why she was asking but she felt compelled to extend the invitation. "I have an ultrasound appointment at two. Maybe you'd like to come?" She pressed her lips together in a thin line and held her breath as she waited for him to reply.
Bam stared at her for a moment, surprised more than anything.
Her hopeful expression faltered. "You don't have to, I mean, if you don't want to-"
"No." He interrupted. "I do want to. That would be..." He trailed off searching for the right word. "Nice."
"Good." she smiled a genuinely him. "Then you can carry my groceries to the truck too. I'm almost out of peanut butter. And you can pump the gas."
Bam grinned at their newfound, if temporary, truce. "Anything else I can do?"
October shrugged. "Probably. I'll think of more jobs for you on the way."
